Having driven, built, owned and sponsored everything from Midgets, Sprints, and Indy cars to Pro Road Racing cars from 1956 through the early 2000s ….. as well as developing, promoting and producing TV for racing events … I'm no expert on any of it. All I know for sure is that the successful drivers, owners and mechanics are very passionate – as are race fans.
What separate the driver's passion from all the others are the extreme self confidence and focus … and an amazing adrenaline rush that doesn't just turn on and off. The good ones don't forgive themselves for "blowing it" on the track ….. let alone forgive anyone else on the track that "almost or actually" blows it for them.
The really good race promoters understand that and temper any knee jerk reactions to the passion on and off the track as long as it doesn't get out of hand. The paying customers sitting in a seat pay to not only see good racing …… but to vent their passion.
The dividing line is simple! The really great drivers like Terry McCarl have earned the right to vent. The not so great drivers usually vent as an excuse for …..!

Racer39,
Brilliant 1st post!
I am a little confused, so allow me to paraphrase;
When a winning driver is angry, they have the right to throw flower pots, but when a losing driver is angry, then he/she must exercise self control. Did I read your post correctly?
These occurrences that we keep debating have little do with passion, instead they are a reflection of that person's character, or lack thereof. Passion is not a "get out of jail free card".

No not just any winning driver, you have to be "really great" and passionate in order to earn the right to vent freely. LOL

I think sometimes we "strain gnat's rearends while swallowing elephants whole".
Let's see. Win the race ... throw the flower pot in the air. Lose the race yourself ..... put your head in the flower pot. Lose the race because of xzqr2 ..... maybe throw some dirt from the flower pot on his/her trailer. All kidding aside. It's okay to be emotional ......! No one is saying violence is OK!
