Well my car is still not fully put back together so we decided to head down the road to Lawton spedway expecting good ascs racing. We get there and are told the track will be heavy and fast. The first set of hot laps, there is already dust getting thrown up in 1&2? It was the exact same way last week because the modified drivers complained about a good track tearing up their cars? What the heck! Well from the beginning of the mod feature, scrap metal was flyin everywhere. Some drivers spun out under yellow! Needless to say they went on to finish with only 7 cars... It was terrible one line racing on the track mod drivers call "perfect". The sprint feature hasn't started yet, but I don't expect a whole lot.

Here we go again, that was the most boring sprint car feature I have ever seen. Anybody who says you tear up less equipment on dry was not at Lawton tonight, the mod feature was a joke. I am anxious to hear people defend the track conditions this week. It pisses me off that they charge $15 for the worst racing of the year so far, I am sure they will top that performance next week but I won't be there to see, I have thrown enough of my money away this year!

Can I change my name to ModifiedFanRob?

I have spent my last dollar at the Lawton speedway until Lupe gets a track ready to RACE on. I thought they would try to get a decent track ready for an ASCS race and the fans that traveled 3,4 or 5 hrs to get there. Nearly every race was won from the front row we saw a 30 minute mod race with 7 or 8 cars finishing out the 18 that started it was after midnight before it was over, saw people leaving during the modified feature most with youngsters in tow. You racers that enjoy that crap like last night I wish you lots of fun, but it will not be at my expense again...

Seems the same people are on here every week whinning about something. They live for the bitching & drama. Looking at the date/times of some of these post, you guys can't wait to get home and get on the internet and start the bashing & criticising again. By the way people, it's Lupi not Lupe, and he has not had one thing to do with the prep on the track this year. Need to know what you're talking about before you start pointing fingers .

You are right Lupi shouldn't get blamed as he hasn't had anything to do with running or preparing the track this year. But some of the other people that have posted on this subject are right also. I do not agree with telling anyone that you don't care if they come either to race or watch racing. I went last night with the thought that the track would be tacky and would get to see some outstanding ASCS sprint car racing. Lanny has a good reputation for making sure the track is top notch when the travelling series visit. The people that Lanny has running the place are listening to the wrong group as far as how the track needs to be prepared. The bottom line is,"If it is not entertaining for the FANS, they WILL quit coming".

When there are no more fans, there will be no more racing.

Think long and hard before you start telling any fan that you don't value them coming to watch what we all love to do.

I guess I dont understand what you guys expect. This was my first time to Lawton and other than the sprint feature the racing was pretty good. I dont think that some of you remember that Sat was the hottest day of the year so far with a heat index of nearly 110 degrees and a nice breeze blowing all day. I guess I just didnt have grand expectations of a super tacky track knowing that its pretty hard to accomplish with the weather like it was. There was very little if any dirt blowing in my face which is something that I really enjoy. It would have been nice if there was a way to get another lane going but it is what it is. Maybe Lawton usually does a good job of getting a tacky track going with high temps, but I guess I just dont know what your angry about because trust me it could have been much much worse.

Yes it was hot, but I have been up there in the middle of July, 100 degrees all week, and on race day and the track has stayed good all night. You can't water it on Saturday and expect a decent track, it will never be any good. I like a track that dries out for the features, but it shouldn't be dry in the hot laps or start of the heat races.

I did not go to Lawton. Instead, I went to the 1st annual Chad McDaniel Memorial race in Beloit, KS. This race was hosted by the POWRi midget series in honor of one of their former members. You guys want to discuss track conditions? Let me just relate what I witnessed. When I arrived at 5:00 PM it was 99 in the shade with a stiff south breeze. The track was dark with small puddles in the tractor tracks. At 5:30, the "mixmaster" gently stirred the top layer of dirt. Next, various vehicles with wide tires circled the track in the opposite direction usually run by the racers. Hot laps were then run, followed by the heat races, and the B features. Next, the water truck came out and applied a light coat of water on the top of the track, which was allowed to soak in for 10-15 minutes. Once again, the "mixmater" came out and worked the track from top to bottom. The packing vehicles then came out and worked the track in the "opposite" direction using their wide tires. Result: a "perfect" track to run on. The full-size midgets and minsprints put on a great show that was over at 10;30 PM. Need I say more? I don't think so.

Lawton's problem is that it's Lawton. There is hardly ever any passing. I love dry slick tracks, but when it's dry there its on the bottom and fans don't enjoy that. Personally I thought the ASCS feature was a good feature. When you use the ASCS format the fast guys start up front so there's not going to be a lot of passing. There was even a pass and a pass back for the lead.

After sort of rambling in that last paragraph, back to Lawton. I don't know if the track is tough to pass on because of the configuration or because every Lanny track I've ever been to is predominately follow the leader. His tracks are either all the way fast or all the way dry. Maybe we should try to water the top and the bottom pretty heavily and keep the middle a little drier so there are 2 lines. I know it's a novel idea, but making the track like that helps with passing which gets the fans into it.

I also have to ask after my first trip to Lawton what the deal is with the mini flagman. I have never seen anything like that before at any race track I've ever been to.

Thats old Raymond. Hes been the mini flagmen at Lawton for as long as I can remember. I started racing at Lawton in 1990 and he was there then. You need to talk to Raymond face to face and Raymond ain't afraid to use the black flag. I think he still rides his schwinn to and from the races. Hes an icon
