This Memorial Day Weekend the Calistoga Speedway will host the Golden State Challenge 410 Winged Sprint Cars along with the return of the Dirt Modifieds. Besides cleaning the facility and testing the lights and scoreboard, new Fair Manager, Carlene Moore brought in an expert in race track safety to consult with the track fire and ambulance crews in the latest procedures. USAC Western VP, Tommy Hunt also attended in the interest of keeping apprised of any new safety technology that might benefit the USAC competitors on the West Coast.

The safety expert was Lon Bromley. Lon has worked all over the world with series such as CART and Formula One to name a few. Among the subjects that were covered was teamwork in fire fighting procedures and teamwork in driver extrication. Discussions about driver cooperation after an accident and unauthorized personnel at the scene of an accident did not fall on deaf ears as Carlene Moore and the attending fairboard members vowed to do everything in their power to keep participants and spectators safe at the historic half mile.

Marty Hawkins and The Hawkins Motorsports team brought in a race car and a bare chassis to cut up and simulate a driver extrication in the event of a serious accident. While none of us hope that this type of training will ever be needed, it is nice to know that the fairboard finds it important enough to spend the time and money to better prepare for such an incident. If you are a competitor at Calistoga and involved in an accident, please respect the crew that comes to make sure you are alright. They spent all day this past Saturday to be better equipped to help you, so please give them just a few minutes to make sure that you are really OK to walk away.

Though I am not officially associated with, nor authorized to report on the specifics of what was taught in this seminar, I would like to Thank Carlene Moore and the Napa County Fairboard for putting in the extra effort to keep racing safe at Calistoga. We were happy we could help in this project and although it made me a bit uncomfortable watching my son get strapped to a backboard, I am proud of his willingness to participate. Thank you to the Bock Racing Team for bringing their midget, to the safety personnel that participated, and finally to Lon for making the trip. You can check out Lon's history and credentials at http://www.safety1motorsports.com/index.html

We hope to see you in Calistoga this weekend
Chad Hawkins

Well thats good the track that holds 5 races a year gets proper training on driver extrication (although they should have done it with a full containment seat) and chico's safety crew doesn't even get trained to use a fire extinguisher. Lets take notes promoters. More drivers that get hurt are less paying your pit pass fees every week think maybe its about time to take care of them. Paul at Marysville has a ambulance and fire engine at the track with trained personel. Thought that was pretty cool when we went there last year and saw that. And congrats to Carlene for thinking about everyone in attendance and not just the money at the front and back gates.
