I have a close friend who lives in Indianapolis. He tells me that an associate of his has been talking with several Indy Racing League owners and that they are reviewing the overall operation of the league and especially the potential design for the car that is to be introduced in a couple of years. They feel that the IRL is nothing more than a feeder league for Formula One and that it's mandatory to return the league and its competitors to its open wheel United States roots.
According to my friend, right now they are definitely leaning towards a front engine roadster design much like those from the 50s and 60s. In addition, they are talking about engines based on production engines with any cars using purpose built racing engines to be assessed a weight penalty. They are also talking about limiting the fuel to methanol.
They have become disenchanted with road courses and are talking about scheduling ONLY ovals. Ovals under consideration include Indianapolis, Phoenix, Milwaukee, Dover, Darlington, New Hampshire, Michigan, Fontana, Iowa, Milwaukee, Kentucky and others. In addition, they are talking about including dirt ovals. Three dirt ovals to be included in the schedule are obviously the Indiana State Fairgrounds and the Duquoin and Springfield tracks. In addition, initial secret talks have been started with both the Del Mar, California and Louisville, Kentucky horse tracks. Points from both paved and dirt competitions would count towards the yearly championship. The point system would be revamped with points based on race lengths. The Indianapolis 500 would be worth 500 points to the winner with 100 mile races worth 100 points. There would be a significant drop (to no more than 75 points) to second place with diminishing points through the rest of the field.
In an effort to nurture competition by United States drivers, cars driven by non-Americans would be assessed a weight penalty.
The proposed name for this series would be American Professional Racing League Focus on Oval Leaders.

My neighbor's ex-wife's third cousin's nephews' best friends' next door neighbors' out-of-wedlock child's father is an employee at Drake Engineering. He commented after he read your posting that the secretary to the President told him personally as he emptied her waste receptical that Penske has already placed an order for 16 of the new 04012010 model of the Offenhauser Engine. Gannasi and Andretti are to tour the facility next week.
