In reading this week's TMAC column... I read what I feel may very well be one of the best racing quotes ever. It's a pet peeve of mine that drives me absolutely NUTS. Glad that Mr. McCarl feels the same way!

Here goes:

"People want to complain about the cost of racing, then go out and buy a 53-foot trailer."

Do you need a 53' trailer to race?

Do you realize a couple of years ago Gary Wright ran out of what appeared to be a 20' trailer?

Are racers incapable of making the show if they do NOT have a private dressing room?

Teams have 1 usable motor... and a 53' trailer? Could they perhaps get by with a 30' trailer and 3 motors??????????

Anyway... kudos to Mr. McCarl for having as much common sense as anyone I've ever followed in racing. Wish more people did.

Yeah, and I have said THIS for years....I'm still waitin' for the first hauler to win a WoO race!

I just love it when people spend 100k to do what they could have done with 20 then quit because they say it costs too much.

For posters outside the Northeast, Bob McCreadie won over 500 features all over the East Coast, and until the very end of his career towed all over the region with an open trailer. McCreadie's gimmick for years and years was that he towed with an open trailer, while winning 25-30 features pretty much every season. The only reason he ever went to an enclosed trailer was because sponsor Kinney Drugs pressured him into using a trailer painted with their colors so that people could see a large Kinney logo while McCreadie was traveling back and forth to races.

While the WoO boys need a bigger trailer because they spend most of the year on the road(you have to carry spares, especailly cars and motors, even with UPS and FEDEX), I'll never understand the need of a local, Friday night team, to have a 53 foot trailer.

It just ties up racing money, as TMAC pointed out!

The reason they buy 53' trailers is because they can. If it makes them happy, so what.

I've never owned or priced a rig so I could be way off base but is the price difference between a 53' and 30' really that much? I would think the major expence would be the truck pulling it, not the trailer. Of coarse a bigger trailer would require a bigger truck, but still.

I have always said "We don't race the Hauler" having a hug hauler is great if you want to keep up with the Jones's. Years ago we would carry all parts needed to rebuild the car less frame. now we carry all the same parts, plus another car!!! Why???? Tracks say they are trying to save racer's money, by making new rules,& making the racer run track tires.......The bottom line is you will never say racer's any money, they will always find something else to buy, add a car, a bigger hauler.....

There is a pretty significant price difference between a 53' trailer like the outlaws use with 2 levels and winches and lounge and all of that and an empty shell 30' gooseneck. Just an empty trailer isnt all that outrageous, but all of the interior add ons and cabinets and stuff can jack up the price. Used trucks can be pretty reasonable. I know the trucks jason sides and kerry madsen were using last year looked pretty rough

Enclosed trailers are a requirement!

Unless of coarse you don't give a rat shit who steals your stuff.

Used to be most racers were good ole boys, now, not so much.

People will steal your shit if it isn't locked up.

So it is mostly a convenience, but more importantly, it is a safegaurd.

I remember back in the 1990s, a National Speed Sport New columnist wrote about a man named John Flach. He had just won the big block Modifield point title at Lebanon Valley Speedway. He was an honest to goodness millionaire, but he claimed he was spending less money than any of the other frontrunners. That's because he was busy running his business and only raced on Saturday nights, so he hauled the car on an open trailer behind an old pickup, as he only lived 20 miles from the track. The car looked like a field filler, no fancy graphics, no shiny wheels. And he didn't have to tie up a ton of money in a fancy rig and trailer to impress the sponsors, because he didn't need sponsors. No uniforms for the crew, a 1960s operation running in the 1990s.

I personally love seeing a pair of 'big haulers.' (heh ...heh) ....

If you're talking about big enclosed trailers that look like a NASCAR operation ??? nah .... I could care less.

You can buy a good used semi truck cheaper than a new dually diesel pickup,sometimes looks can be decieving.

trailers and rigs are easier for financing than verses a 50k motor, not much good on the topic, but, Im just pointing out the fact, Seems the local sees a front runner useing "this" and there goes the dominos. I too, dont understand local drivers pulling a 53' empty trailer four miles away from the shop, Cmon, like thats practical.

I'd rather be in Knoxville.
