I flew back to California March 22 to get some valuable seat time before the USAC National Midget Series gets into high gear. There were four 360 Sprint car races in two nights in wing and non-wing cars owned by Walt Branco and Brian Sperry, respectively, with Brian turning the wrenches on each of the carss.

I woke up early Thursday morning at 4:30 to get ready to leave for the airport. I had a 7:30 flight on Southwest, but it was delayed because of bad weather. I finally left for Chicago at 10 and, thankfully, my connecting flight to San Jose, Calif. was also delayed. What was supposed to be a 12:25 p.m. arrival turned into 2 p.m.

The next hiccup in the trip was the loss of my luggage and helmet bag. I had no idea if I was going to have my race gear in time so I was making phone calls to get a back up plan just in case. Well around 8 p.m. I got the call and headed back to the airport. They had my stuff and I started to relax a little.

I knew the two nights in Chico were going to be busy since I would be driving in two of the three classes in the pits. There were no qualifications Friday night, instead there was a pill draw to determine the starting line-up for the heat races. You received points for where you finished in the heat race, dropping three points per position. A driver would also gain 1 1/2 points for each car they passed. I started outside row one for the non-wing heat and won. That placed me third overall in points in that division.

I remember the 'old man', Chuck Sr., running without a roll cage.
