Great Story here!
If memory serves, Shane won that same Eldora race again in '79, this time driving for Trostle. Earl paid the 10'Gs in a bucketfull of silver dollars!!
Feel free to correct me if my memory isn't what it used to be.

That's a great article there! I'll never forget watching Shane wheel the modified and then super at Tulsa on pretty much a weekly basis back in the 70's. When we lost him to the "big time" it was a big, big deal for us. I'll never forget waiting to get our hands on the NSSN to see how he, Howerton and McElreath were doing in the "big leagues". Then we also lost "Stoney" from the local scene when he went out to PA in the OFIXCO #21 to try his luck out there too...those were some great times! Man, the internet sure made life easier for us...

Bob Trostle arranged that ride with the Nickels brothers for Shane. Bob knew Shane couldn't go that long in Bob's car, no power steering. Nickels (NBC steering) had power steering. Ask Shane about the nickname Bob gave him after a long race at a high-speed track earlier in the year.

Very good read!
I had the pleasure of getting to know Shane two year ago at the WRG booth at RPM.
Great guy, a true ambassador for the sport!

Shane ran manual Schroeders down here on everything from a 5/8's to a 1/4. 30 to 50 laps, 1700-2000 # cars. Won some races too. I'm certain there was more to it than that.
