Friday night ice cream with the “Ice Man” James Sweeney at Placerville Cold Stone

2006 Rookie of the Year set to “scoop and sing” at local creamery this Friday night

PLACERVILLE, CA – This Friday night, March 30, local race fans will have the opportunity to see Placerville’s James Sweeney, the 2006 Placerville Speedway Rookie of the Year in a whole new light. The young driver known as the “Ice Man” will be on hand Friday night at Cold Stone Creamery in Placerville along with his locally sponsored #20 sprint car.
The Friday night appearance for Sweeney won’t be your typical “meet and greet” event, however. While Sweeney’s car will be on display outside of the creamery located at 3967 Missouri Flat Road in Placerville, the former outlaw kart star will be busy inside, scooping ice cream to patrons from 6 p.m. until 8.p.m.
Those who know the routine of Cold Stone Creamery are well aware of the “tipping” policy at each establishment. When a patron purchases a dessert and tips their server, it is mandatory for all work to pause and those behind the counter to sing to the restaurant. While Sweeney may not be setting his sights on American Idol anytime soon, he is ready to sing all night long if needed as all the proceeds during his appearance will be donated to his racing fund by the establishment.
During the 2006 racing season, Placerville Speedway hosted one of the closest battles in the coveted Rookie of the Year title. During the 12 championship point races that took place, it was Sweeney and Matt Petty of Jackson who dueled for the title all season long. On one given week, the night would end with Petty a few digits ahead of Sweeney in the standings. The next week, Sweeney would rally back ahead of his friendly rival.
At the conclusion of the season, Sweeney edged Petty in the point standings by 11 digits with one top ten and one top five feature event finish. Petty finished the year with two top ten finishes and a heat race victory. The 2006 racing season concluded with both Sweeney and Petty being awarded the prestigious Rookie of the Year award.
This year, Sweeney returns to run the entire championship point racing season at Placerville Speedway and the Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Series. In his sophomore year, Sweeney hopes to achieve a top five finish in both campaigns as he continues his journey to one day reach auto racing’s premier level of competition, the NASCAR Nextel Cup.
Sweeney will be at the Cold Stone Creamery located in the Safeway Shopping Center from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On Friday evening along with his brand new car that will be in action the following night at Placerville Speedway. While race fans will have the opportunity to see Placerville’s most eligible teenage bachelor serenade them at the event, season race schedules will be on hand at Cold Stone and a representative from Placerville Speedway will be on site as well to answer any questions about the upcoming racing season.
