I talked to Lorne Nutall from Elk City earlier last week and he talked about how Elk City and Quartz Mountain always fought for cars. Well, I put in a VHS tape of the NCRA late model show from OKC this morning (Thursday) until football started and when Claxton was giving feature introductions, he mentioned about a Callahan (?) winning the Quartz Mountain late model championship.
Was Quartz Mountain that big of a deal race track wise to where it rivaled Lawton and Elk City? Just courious on more information about it. There was a guy from Altus a couple of years ago who emailed me that he had film from that area and if I was interested in helping him convert it to DVD to let him know. I have lost that email and his contact information so if he happens to read this, please email me.

they used to run late models there, they would have specials on labor day and memorial day they were usually 50 lap features on a very slick, dark race track and they paid alot better than they do now. a church owned it and they would write you a check and then cash your check there. it was back in the mid 80's, when racing was real racing you built what you raced, but that was the good old days.

David,
When I was a kid Dad would race at Quartz Mountaina for specials and they would always have latemodels. I remember that being the first place a seen a wedge body. That was such a cool track and when you werent racing there was plenty to do in the park. I always looked forward to going I remember riding the pedal boats.
I would guess that it was probably Bill or Frank Callahan They both drove Latemodels in the 80s. Frank Callahan also drove Stanly Reed SR's 1s streetstock some after Mike Spivey.

I remember Quartz Mountain racin in the 60's, thats where I saw my first dirt track race. they were all mid 50's Ford and Chevy. If I'm not mistakin it was at the rodeo grounds then, I seem to remember the shutes on the front straight but I was only 6 or 7 back then.

My dad used to work the track on fridays and saturdays up there and he ran a wedge late model. I was real little back then but from what I remember it was always a pretty good show. David he still has alot of vhs tapes that mom filmed from up there. These were on the tape i watched Gene Bryce, David Bryce, Dale Copenhaver, Dusty Lathrop, Bill Callahan, Chub Daniels, Bobby Smith Sr, Mike Salmon and some more I couldn't hear clearly.

HA-HA I bet you get alot of e-mails when I get it converted to a cd I'll let you know it's a pretty good one 1990-1991 SFS season. I was on the flagstand and Jack was the announcer. Skeeter made me a crash tape.
