Nice video, never heard of that guy or his wing. Would a different wing have worked better and just looked bad and the sprint car series' banned them or did they not ever work better than what we have.
PS I swear that was the late great Steve Evans calling that race. Another great guy who died way to young, don't think he was even 60 years old. Who was the other announcer in the booth, sounded like that Thursday nite thunder guy, Rice or something???
Adding $6 trillion of debt in his 1st term and now if
elected again he wouldn't have to worry about an
electorate in 2016 so the sky is the limit. And his EPA
would continue to put the screws to oil drilling and
mining for coal. Can you say bankruptcy.

Looks like march of 1988. Many thanks. I hardly remember that one. The best race announcers ever... Evans and Brock Yates.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Yes, Tom Johnson ran several times with the Outlaws. He even set fast time once at Devil's Bowl at an Outlaw show.

I think he set fast time during one of the Knoxville Nationals prelims and then busted his butt in a bad flip. Don't think he had raced since.
Yep on Brock Yates and Steve Evans. Always looked forward to TNN's American Sports Calvacade and their filming of WoO sprint car races.

Ugly as that car was, there has to be a huge interesting story there.
The car before this one was a Greg Weld roadster that many including me, thought was an old Indy car. But it too was a sprinter.

Seems to me that I recall that the Weld roadster was built by Don Brown of "Mechanical Rabbit" fame....although I could have recall issues here....

Interesting to say the least.

great old video, it show's how creativity has all but gone from sprintcar racing... and also shows that the way the cars looked and ran back in '88 would be fine right now with me.

If I remember right that car was built around a BIG block chevy also when I seen it last it had A chain driven wing adjuster and the motor was reverse rotation. You could really hear that big block they sound soooo good. What ever happened to that car it needs to be in the knoxville museum it shows the enginuity that has made sprint cars what they are today

I agree with the Knoxville museum thing. Probably not around, but a clone would do fine. It would be a huge conversation piece at the Hall of Fame, and maybe have a video clip of the car (the video above would do just fine).

Also look at the front spring setup in the video the frame stops behind the front axle and it uses a carbon fiber leaf setup. If you had closeup photos of this car(1988) and bondios chilbowl midget(2005) theres not much differance

Tom Johnson was the owner/builder/driver of this car. Tom raced weekly out of Devils Bowl Speedway. He had a degree in aeronatical engineering and most everything on this car was designed around that line of thinking. It ran fiberglass (not carbon fiber) cross leaf springs. It did win a heat during the Knoxville Nationals but was never a big winner. And yes the wings where suppose to look like that.
The older I get the faster I use to be

Back then they didn't have decent tie-downs to keep the car on the LR. I've heard that Karl used to chain down the left side of the car on a really fast track. I don't know if that's true or not but it's pretty cool. Instead of a chain this guy made a better wing. Now everyone just runs big tie-downs to keep the car off the RR.

Of interesting note to me is the lack of stagger. Nonetheless, the car always seemed to be tempermental.

Why can't the TV producers these days find camera angles that make the cars look that fast???
Cars always look slower during the daylight, and that track was far from tacky, but damn they looked like they were flying!!!!
Tulsa was a fast little joint, especially during night races. I remember a 103 degree day in 1998 when the track would still pull your shoes off after the feature was over that night. All 20 cars in the feature were carrying the front wheels down both straights every lap!!!
Loose is when you hit the wall with the rear of the
car, tight is when you hit the wall with the front of
the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and
torque is how far you move the wall.
