Franz Thrills in NCRA Mod Finale
Daniels Claims First Ever Series Championship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 17, 2009 – Park City, Kansas - Former five-time series champion Brian Franz completed his sweep of Hard Rock Hotel – Casino feature events held this year at 81 Speedway as he won his fourth O'Reilly/NCRA modified event in as many races, this one in dramatic fashion, as he passed race long leader Brian Powers on the final lap. While Franz added to his dominance at the track, it was veteran Dan Daniels of Humboldt, Kansas picking up his first ever O'Reilly/NCRA championship.
Powers and Nic Baalman started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with Powers quickly taking the lead as the green flag fell. Only one lap would be complete before the first of two caution flags fell of the event fell when Kirk Coleman spun in turn four.
On the restart, Powers again powered his way out front while Franz picked off Baalman to take over the runner up position while Daniels settled into the third position. Only one lap was complete before the night's final caution flag fell for Casey McCaskey's spin down the front stretch.
The final restart saw Powers, who came into the night just forty-five points out of the lead in the point standings, do what he had to do as he continued to set the pace up front and maintained a three to five car length lead throughout the race.
The leader began entering lapped traffic on lap seventeen but that didn't seem to slow down the Wichita veteran as he continued unchallenged and seemingly ready to reach victory lane for the first time in 2009. However Franz, aboard the Leon Dewitt powered/Billsbuilt chassis had other thoughts and on the final lap down the backstretch, got a strong run on Powers and as the leader got bottled up behind a lapped car in turns three and four, he dove underneath both and out ran Powers to the finish line to pick up the half car length victory.
"I really thought I would never get him," said Franz afterwards. "I was running really well where I was and on that last lap he slipped off the bottom because of that lapped car and was able to get underneath him."
Finishing third was the least concern for Daniels as it was enough to earn him his first career O'Reilly/NCRA modified championship, one that has eluded him for years. "I have won a lot of big races around this part of the country but was always told I need to win this championship to make it complete," said a relieved Daniels. "This being moved from a two night show last weekend to just one night this weekend really helped us as we just had to be consistent. I want to thank Cactus Cattle Company, Johnson Cattle Company, Hughes chassis and my crew Todd and Jim for helping make all this happen. "
Ryan McAninch and Baalman would round out the top five in the final Hard Rock Hotel – Casino feature for the 2009 race season.
The ten lap heat races for the thirty-seven car field were won by Powers, Baalman, Daniels and Franz. Greg Stephens took home the ten lap "C" feature, finish second to Jason Schniepp in the twelve lap "B" and work his way to tenth in the feature.
