Sanders Strolls to NCRA Sport Mod Victory
Inaugural Championship Still Undecided
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Meeker, Oklahoma – October 10, 2009 - Rodney "The Rocket" Sanders may have started on the pole but it was no easy task as the Happy, Texas driver withstood several race long challenges and a strong restart challenge to pick up the O'Reilly/NCRA sport modified Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature victory on Saturday night at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma as part of the tracks Fall Nationals.
Sanders and his Race Car chassis took to the point as the green flag fell on the twenty lap feature with outside front row starter Robert Elliott giving chase. Sanders opened a three car length lead before the first of two caution flags fell on lap two when Tad Sweitzer went for a spin in turn four.
Elliott would get underneath the leader entering turns one and two on the restart but it was Sanders who kept the momentum up top and held on to the lead. While these two were battling for position, fifth starting Donnie Raney got underneath Levi Galmor for the third position while Todd Decker ran fifth.
Sanders would begin to pull away from Elliott and by lap seven had opened up a ten car length advantage. Sanders looked to be cruising to his first career NCRA victory before the second and final caution flag appeared on lap twelve when David Givens went for a spin in turn one.
The final restart looked to be the doom for Sanders as Elliott once again pulled even with the leader entering turns one and two but this time stayed with Sanders heading down the backstretch. Sanders, however, held the momentum up top and kept the lead heading down the front stretch on lap thirteen.
From there Sanders began to pull away and would go the final distance unchallenged to pick up the twelve car length victory. Elliott ended a dry two race sell of DNF's to come home second with Raney settling for third. Decker came home fourth while Rudas Galmor rounded out the top five.
Current series point's leader Chad McNamara had a challenging night as he had to qualify for the Hard Rock Hotel-Casino through the eight lap "B" feature and finished in the fourth and final transfer position. He would then work his way up to a tenth place finish. This, coupled with Raneys third place finish now puts McNamara's points lead down to twenty points heading into the final points race for the inaugural season of the O'Reilly/NCRA sport modifieds on Saturday night, October 17th.
The eight lap heat races for the twenty-seven car field were won by Raney, Sanders and Elliott while Landon Maddox took home the ten lap "B" feature honors.
