Rowland Rolls to NCRA Oklahoma Mod Victory
Weaver Claims Inaugural Season Championship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Meeker, Oklahoma – October 10, 2009 - The 2009 campaign for the inaugural season of the O'Reilly/NCRA Oklahoma modified division came to a close Saturday night and it was Woodward, Oklahoma's Bryan Rowland becoming the first repeat winner of the year as he took home the Hard Rock Hotel-Casino feature victory at Brill Motor Speedway in Meeker, Oklahoma. But while Rowland took home the victory it was Amarillo, Texas driver Gene Weaver picking up the division championship.
William Gould and Greg Burt started on the front row for the twenty-five lap feature with Gould taking the early lead as the green flag fell. Gould used the top cushion at the top of the track to keep his pace while third starting Tate Cole quickly moved into the runner up position using the low line on the track and challenged Gould for the lead. While Gould was credited with leading each lap early, Cole put pressure and the Calera driver throughout the races early stages.
While the battle waged side by side for several laps, Burt and fifth starting Rowland battled side by side for the third position with Burt up top on the cushion.
The top four continued to battle for position before the first and only caution flag fell on lap six when Rodney Sanders went for a spin at the bottom of turn four.
On the restart Gould continued to set the pace with Cole continuing to put pressure on the leader. But behind them Rowland began to set his pace and by lap nine had caught Cole for the runner up position and then set his sights on the leader. Rowland pulled along side Gould down low on lap eleven and one lap later took over the top spot coming out of turn four.
While Rowland slowly began to pull away from the rest of the field it was Gould, Chad Wheeler and Cole battling for the runner up position. With two laps to go Wheeler caught Gould and passed him for the runner up position but it was too late to catch the leader as Rowland went on to take the ten car length victory.
"This track just seems to fit my driving style," said Rowland, driving the Roadrunner Trucking/87 Automotive sponsored Skyrocket chassis. "We had thought the top was the place to run but settled down there on the bottom and it turned out to be the right place."
Wheeler and his Wheeler Metals sponsored Hughes Racing chassis settled into the runner up finishing position while Gould held on to the third spot. Cole finished fourth while Randy Timms worked his way up from his ninth starting position to round out the top five.
"Boy we ran like crap," said division champion Weaver. "I am glad we won the championship, don't get me wrong, but boy I sure would have liked to put on a better showing. The drive (from Amarillo) didn't bother me all that much this year as I had fun running the different tracks that I have never been to before."
Alan Oliva of Moore finished second in the final point standings, just 95 points out of first. Travis Penrod, Logan Cabbell and Cam Case rounded out the top five in the first year for the O'Reilly/NCRA Oklahoma modified division. The top ten drivers in the final point standings will join the other four divisions of the series at the year end banquet, to be held in Wichita, Kansas on January 30th, 2010. More details on the banquet will be released soon.
Logan Cabbell won the twelfth place C&E Performance product certificate while Travis Penrod won a free wrap from On Another Level Designs out of Lawton and Greg Burt a free wrap from M&M Custom Creations & Designs out of Shawnee.
