Here is something a little different. This shot was taken at Jackson
Speedway, although back then it was VFW Speedway and in those days
white pants were still required in the pits.
Long time Minnesota native Gordy Vogelaar was behind the wheel and I think it was in the 6 cylinder class?

Cool. the first year I went to jackson was 83, so I missed seeing these. I think the VFW had dropped the 6-cyl class and that it was the first year for the Unlimited sprints, the second class was 317s. We only went a few times that year and my memory is fuzzy... somebody else have more accurate memories (facts) to share?
Look at how flat that wing was... no front wing, but still...

Ha... maybe older than Jackson's dirt.
Speaking of which, remember the sound of a couple dozen push trucks out ironing the track prior to time trials? You could hear it over the the trucks. The sound of tires suctioning to that black, usually smooth, dirt. The track was so sticky, even the strongest powerplants would lug through and off turn 2.

Now the only time it's like that is after a 2" rain,,, but it's strange how it just rains in the corners and there is DUST on the straights...

What a surprise it is to see my old 6-cyl. Supermodified on Hoseheads!!! I sold this car to Gordy Vogelaar. It was an old CAE sprint car with the ducktail coupe body. The engine was a 225 cubic inch slant six mopar with an offenhauser manifold and a holley 4-barrel. The rearend was a 9-inch ford and a mopar 3-speed manual trans. I ran this car as a white and red number 61 and later as a wild silver, red and purple #61. I purchased this car from Chris Johnson and Rick Jones from Worthington MN. They raced it as a yellow number 9. Seems funny how it got returned to yellow and a double nine on it!!! I finished 3rd in points my first season and was voted 6-cyl driver of the year 1979 at Jackson VFW Speedway. I wonder if this car still is in existance? I would like to buy it back to run it in a vintage racing club. I ran this car at Jackson, Husets and Hartford Speedways. Sure had fun with it!!! Those were the good ole days. I used to race gocarts against Gordy at the Nobles County Fairgrounds. I am pretty sure this was Gordys first ride. I also sold a limited sprint car a red and white # 14 to Fran Bruns after running it a couple of seasons. That car was Fran Bruns first ride also!!!
Neat Blast from the Past!!! Thanks for posting this!!!

Does it make me old if I remember you and Gordy driving that car! Gordy raced snowmobiles out of our shop back then.

Hey Rick,I sold the car to Terry Alexander from Knoxville.Maybe he knows where it went. I had a hard time keeping those slant sixes together ! Ran the car the first couple shows at Jackson without wings ,then I believe Gary Scott got killed at K-ville and wings were required from then on. Got that wing from Bob Harris in Superior Ia and that thing was heavy, the slant six had a real hard time pulling it around the track!!, .Curt Thurmer had a V 6 in a Frantsen sprint chassis that year nobody could touch. Jimmy K your right, went 317 the next season. Nice shot Lee.
