Cody what time was the show over with?? It looked like when we came by the track from Creek County at midnight that they were still running.
When I-44 first opened they used to have that many cars every Saturday night until the promotor ran off everyone. Glad to see that they now have a different promotor

I think it was around 1230am or 1245am. They didn't even screw around or anything - just had lots of races to run. Track was tacky throughout - but never that rough. Got juuuust a lil choppy in the final race (multi a main). And thank you sincerely Mike for those tickets/free passes. The racing was as good and even better than we expected. On behalf of The Fantasy Section in attendance at last nights race......thanks Mike.
It was remarkable that Berkley pulled that off. We left the OU game early in the 3rd - and drove straight over to I-44 Speedway. All throughout the area - from 89th south to 149th - from I-44 over to Western - there was standing water everywhere. I don't just mean puddles - I mean all the drainage ditches were flooded. Right before we got there i thought no way they can run.....then I get there - and they have trailers backed up damn near out to the highway.
Their parking lot (which is just a good sized field) was swamped. And yet they had to pit about 25 trailers out in the parking lot, not to mention private vehicles. And still the pits were susbstantial. All the dirt/grass in the grandstand area was wet/muddy. But it wasn't too bad. I was even more excited when I got there and they had a fella out directing the parking - and he openly said "hey if you get stuck we got everything needed to pull you out". So even the parking was an adventure. I found things out about my Mazda I never knew before. Thankfully, their help was not needed though lol.
And to have the big haulers there parked out in the parking lot was cool. Hell, at the end of the heats - we just got hand stamps and ran out there and checked em out and talked to some of the drivers. Namely a Multi driver who none of us knew who he was. His name was Dustin Gates - towed all the way up from Shreveport, Louisiana. Cool dude.
And it was kind of cool assisting the track announcer during the last couple features. Although I usually need his assistance more to get names for the top 10 of each feature lol. Chad Lindsey. great announcer. and an even better guy.
Strangely, I won the 50/50 drawing. strange because I've never won anything like that before. Granted - I needed helpful odds lol. I won 58$. Which really just reflects the unfortunate that not more fans were in the stands for yet another stellar show. And it was STELLAR.
There was only one drawback to the evening. The stands there at I-44 are already somewhat treacherous. Not rickety or anything - they just aren't proportioned to adults correctly - Wescoe once said these stands look they were built for an army of Gary Coleman's. funny statement. But it's even worse when those stands get wet. And obviously in the late evening it did not rain. But the air was THICK with moisture. So humid the air smelled putrid, like mildew. Of course, the nearness of cow shit, ponds, and a river only adds to that lol. And mean it looked like the smoky ground of a battlefield that lacked a breeze. Not much wind. But those stands got this thick greasy layer of wetness on them that prompted everyone to take their time. I mean take it SLOW - but a couple slippages did occur - thankfully with no injury other than slightly wounded pride.
On a somewhat related note. I-44 seems to bring out the best of/in people. Including some classic one liners that sound much like they should be written down - and thus immortalized. Now granted, us older fans come up with some funny stuff. But much of it would not be right to repeat - nor would any of us want that lol. BUT - it's different with the youngin's. Ever have that young friend/relative that says something that just sort of makes you chuckle - and then you wander "where the hell did THAT come from?" or maybe you just thought it was a funny saying/ funny way to put something? yeah. well like I said - I-44 seems to bring out the best.
So 2 statements. that for some obscure reason I thought were worth writing down - and remembering - made by great young lads that will make future great men.
first. when several young ladies were courting the young casanova that sometimes goes by Brandon Boggs among several other aliases (B2, B Squared, Dirt Squared, Don Juan lol) - it was noted after a superb non wing A Feature a couple of weeks ago the chatter going on around us. Sure 'nuff - several young girls were hollering up the young "Chick magnet" - when his father inquired as to what this rucus was all about Brandon replied with a great one liner that has since been immortalized..."They think we're cheerleaders, they think it's hot, WE'RE GOIN' WITH IT". Now not so sure why we thought it was so funny - maybe it's just knowing the Young Casanova - but the laughter has flowed on that comment ever since. Maybe it's just because thats a rather strange thing to just walk up and hear someone say. strange, but yet genuinely brilliant. Like in a Sean Connery sort of way lol.
And then last night. Being the great fella Wescoe is - he took his young nephew Christian to both the OU game - and then to I-44. Young chap hasn't seen a lot of races - so one could imagine the wide eyes "wows" of his attendance of last nights great race... A little later his mother came to the track to get him as they had to get up early today. In the midst of the conversation among adults young Christian stole the "line of the night" out of nowhere........with.......
"I have a preying mantis..................and it hates my sister"
There isn't a cooler thing at a racetrack (thus in the world) than cool young race fans lol
