I got my hands on a copy of the 1974 Hutchinson Nationals fire. As soon as I can learn how to youtube it and post it here then I will. That is if you all want to see it since nobody died in it. Watching it I can tell you it is rather scary, even though the camera was on top of the grandstands.

That would be the one Roger Cornish filmed from the old press box on top of the grandstand roof. Roger was up there as his dad was doing live radio for KWBW 1450am.

Hey Warren, have you seen it? While it lacks compared to todays filming, you get the gest on just how scary it was, including all the explosions and people running from the track and grandstands.
Warren, remember to please keep an eye out for any old film from 1980 on back to as early as possible. I am collecting all that stuff and want even more copies if possible. I thought I had heard somewhere that somebody filmed Leeps last Hutch Nationals win back in the early 80's. Would love to have a copy of that.

This video is pretty frightening to see. They have a copy at the Kansas Auto Racing Museum in Chapman, Kansas that you can view. David if you're looking for some older stuff that might be a place to check out!
This happened well before I was born but I know Jack Petty well as his grandson and I have been close friends for most of my life. It really puts into perspective how far we've come with safety since then.

David,Have you had a chance to watch?I tried to have it restored as much as they could but as old as this tape is that,s all they could do.I hope this don,t open up old wounds but it,s apart of racing history an it needs to be presevered. J.D. I gave Chris a copy to give to you. Alan Beutler

I recorded it off of the KWCH 12 news story. Roger has been the achor for the Wichita TV news for years. He was a Hutchinson boy. They had Jack on there. It was like 25 years after. They ran it as part of one of the reality TV show CBS was doing. It came on right after the reality show was over at 10:00.
