It was the final points race of the 2009 season for the winged 360. sprint cars. Alissa Geving in the family owned #3x only needed to qualify her sprinter to secure the 2009 Petaluma Speedway track championship. She did it in style by going out and setting fast time over the 17 car field with a time of 13.33 seconds. Geving now has back to back championships to add to her resume on the 3/8" gumbo clay oval. Track was greasy for qualifying as most cars ran in the mid 13's. Weather was chilly and foggy - no surprise there.
New to the track this yeat was the #42 of Joshua Bates. Also in attendance was the #29x of Cameron Mendes of Rohenrt Park who has spent much of his Saturday nights racing up in Placerville. Notable absences were the #35 of Rickey Wright, Jr (likely at Chowchilla for the new Wright One series. Good to see the #20 of Nicole Miller, the #96 of Todd Miller, and the #3A of Adrien Betournay return to the track. The cars were split into 3 heats.
Heat 1 - 6 cars, 8 laps - finish, car#, name (started)
1. #19, Brandon Davis (2) 2. #20, Miller (1) 3. #29x, Mendes (3) 4. #7x, Nick Ringo (5) 5. #51, John Kirby, Jr. (6) 6. #3x, Geving (4-DNF) - First start saw the #20 of Miller clip the front end of Geving just past the flagstand sending Geving into the infield with front end damage and off on the tow truck. She would not return for the complete restart. Davis quickly jumped to the lead from his outside row 1 position. Cars stretched out and the race became a more of an 8 lap practice session.
Heat 2 - 6 cars , 8 laps - finish, car#, name (started
1. #56, Shawn Arriaga (1) 2. #5, Devon Ostheimer (4) 3. #32, Norm Johns (2) 4. #3A, Betournay (3) 5. #63 Ivan Worden (6) 6. #96, Miller (5) - Ostheimer was the one to watch in this heat as jumped to 3rd quickly and then passed Johns with a momentum move coming out of turn 2 and down the backstretch on lap 5 to grab the runner up spot. Arriaga led all 8 laps from the pole.
Heat 3 - 5 cars, 8 laps - finish, car #, name, (started)
1. #10c, Keith Collins (2) 2. #42, Bates (3) 3. #5v, Bradley Terrell (4) 4. #51x, Gary Paulson (7) 5. #7, Jake Haulot (1-DNF) - The opening lap saw yellow when Collins and Haulot made contact coming out of 2 while battling for the top spot. Haulot would come to a stop with front end damage and was off on the hook. Collins kept going and was able to keep his outside front row spot for the complete restart. At the drop of the green Collins pulled out to the lead. Terrell grabbed 3rd on the opening lap for the only change. Collins led all 8 laps to grab the checkered flag.
A-Main - 17 cars, 25 laps - finish, car#, name (started)
1. #19, Davis (1) 2. #5v, Terrell (5) 3. #32, Johns (7) 4. #42, Bates (2) 5. #3x, Geving (13) 6. #3A, Betournay (3) 7. #5, Ostheimer (6) 8. #20, Miller (9) 9. #56, Arriaga (10) 10. #7h, Haulot (14) 11. #96, Miller (15) 12. #51, Kirby, Jr. (16) 13. #10c, Collins (8) 14. #7x, Ringo (11-DNF) 15. #63, Worden (17-DNF) 16. #29x, Mendes (4-DNF) 17. #51x, Paulson (12-DNF) - The race was dominated by the pole starting Davis as he sped away from the field on each restart and handled llapped traffic with relative ease. By the end of lap 1 Davis was crossing the line as the 2nd running Mendes was coming out of turn 4. Mendes had moved up nicely to the bridesmaid position from 4th starting on the opening lap. Paulson retired from the race on lap 4 pulling into the infield as the race stayed green. By lap 5 Davis was already in traffic and racing his way around slower cars. On lap 9 Mendes night ended on a sour note while running 2nd as he stopped at the bottom of turn 3 with a blown motor. Restart and Davis is long gone again. The #5v of Terrell move around Bates to grab 2nd on lap 10 as Davis continues to pull away. Arriaga comes to a stop low in turn 4 to bring out the yellow on lpa 14. Johns uses the restart to take 5th with a low move in turn 1.. Lap 16 and Worden flips hard in turn 4 to bring out the red. Drvier was reported OK. Johns uses the the enusing re-start to grab 4th with an outside pass in turns 1&2 of the #3A of Betrournay.. Final yellow came out on lap 17 as Ringo stopped low in turn 2 after contact with Haulot. Johns would grab 3rd on lap 19 with a backstretch pass of Bates. During tthe mid to late stages of the race Geving began her steady march up to finish 5th from 13th starting to earn hard charger. Davis easily takes the checkers with a fast lap during the later stages of the race of a wicked fast 12.279.
