Tony Jones at Lakewood Benefit Update

Kevin Kierce faces surgery but may be on hand this Sunday

Lakewood, CA. – Tony Jones and the Alexander Race Team will be on hand at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge this Sunday (August 16) as the Lakewood bar holds their third annual fund-raiser for the 2007 USAC/CRA Champions.

A raffle, 50/50 draw, free Taco wagon, happy hour prices all afternoon and videos from Raceway Video are planned as part of the day's festivities. The bar plans to unveil its new 42" television for viewing of all the sprint car action from Perris Auto Speedway.

Several racing personalities will be on hand as well, including five-time CRA Champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Oskie and former driver Steve Howard. Also planning to attend are motor sports Internet journalist Mike Grosswendt and popular Ken Wagner of the Wagsweb. Both men are integral to the sport of sprint car racing as both promote annual races in southern California. Wagner or "Wags" as he is known to his many admirers promotes the annual "Wagsdash" that is designed to help the smaller racing teams. It has been held at Ventura Raceway the last few years, but due to the limited USAC/CRA schedule the popular race has been postponed until next year. His Internet journal follows the 410 sprint car season. Grosswendt promotes the annual All Coast Construction Challenge, a three race series that features larger purses for the sprinters running at Ventura Raceway, that is popular with both fans and drivers. His Internet blog "Surfnsprint" delivers a unique perspective of the hard core racing featured at Ventura.

Also indicating that they may make the Jones/Alexander benefit are Perris Auto Speedway's track announcer Scott Daloisio, considered by many to be the best in the business, and last year's Ventura Raceway sprint car champion Kevin Kierce. Kierce again leads the points chase this season and is scheduled for back surgery this week, but has indicated that he is an "absolute maybe" for Sunday's fund-raiser. We hope the veteran driver can make it.

Raffle prizes are impressive with the coveted first edition of Open Wheel Magazine, that features Tony's famous father Bubby Jones on the cover; artist Braden Wasson's rendition of the Alexander championship sprint car with Jones strapped inside; a 1977 copy of the "Manzy Mag" and the Western World Championships which again features Bubby on the cover (donated by Scott Daloisio); the book, Living Where the Thunder Hides, documenting Jan Opperman's sprint car career; several videos donated by Jeff Kristensen of Raceway Video; two terrific photos (Ventura four-wide action) taken by new VRA photographer Christopher Eugster and many other items.

Every thing gets started around 12 noon with ticket sales for both the raffle and 50/50 draw and the coldest drinks in the southland. The raffle drawing will be held at 4 p.m. with the 50/50 drawing to follow. All proceeds go to the Alexander Race team and driver Tony Jones.

On a side note – by popular request of a fellow poster (Buzzard) the Zanzabuku has laid in stock at least two cases of P.B.R. (Pabst Blue Ribbon beer for you younger race fans). Special price and guaranteed cold! The Zanzabuku is located at 4825 Paramount Blvd., Lakewood, CA. The cross street is Del Amo Blvd. For more information called the bar at 562.423.9872.

It is the very least we can do for you. Thank you for all of your contributions to the sport that we all enjoy so much - sprint car racing. Thank you for your donation for our raffle that is getting bigger by the day. Can't wait to see the new shirts. BTW, just received four pairs of tickets from Ventura Raceway. Thanks to Jammy and everyone at the "Best Little Dirt Track in America". Spoke with Tony this morning and we will have some surprise guests and sprint cars show up on Sunday. He wouldn't tell me who but we our more excited now about the Jones/Alexander event. Kevin Kierce's back surgery was a success and he is expected out of the hospital tommorow. Hope he can make it.

BTW, just a note on Ken Wagner and his team of "Wagtimers." Ken, or "Wags" as he is better known, has raised an amazing $518,901.27 during his many years of fund raising and "Wagsdash" races. All designed to help the smaller race teams. That is an incredible history. He will be at our event early and then back to Las Vegas (where he now lives) as he and his wife have a date to attend a Roger Williams concert in Las Vegas.

Hey TRIP what happened to Kierce ? Why did he need back surgery?

I asked Kevin that question and he said that it became a problem when he was promoted to a superintendent job in construction and that sitting had somehow created a bulging disc(s). I thought that it might have been the result of a racing incident, but not so. It was great meeting Kevin and his buddy Russ (who drives the car to the track each week). Kevin graciously donated several tee-shirts for our fund raiser. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, the weather was near perfect, lots of race cars and hot rods. Thanks to everyone!
