DAVID CARDEY BACK IN USAC/CRA POINT LEAD AFTER IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE!
(AUGUST 4, 2009, RIVERSIDE, CA) On a night that saw a full range of racing highs and lows, Riverside, California's David Cardey reclaimed the point lead in the Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday night.
After losing the point lead at the previous race at The PAS on July 4th, Cardey entered last week's Sprint Car war in third place. However, he was only 13-points out of first. By the time the final checkered flag waved to end a 30-lap main event that had more intrigue and plot twists than a mid-afternoon soap opera, Cardey was once again on top of the point heap.
Cardey's interesting journey on the night began when he qualified eighth in the tough 34-car field. Starting on the back row of the fourth heat race, he steered his ITI powered Viper 5 Bar Chassis to a second place finish and a ticket to start on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap main event.
In a story book world, the tale would have Cardey leading all 30-laps to win the main, but this is serious business and anything but a fairy tale. Things started out great for the slender 33-year old when the green flag sent the field on their way. He jumped into the lead and his hard driving style dazzled the crowd as he led the first seven circuits. He looked like the driver to beat, but in turn four on the eighth lap, he spun and stopped near the crashwall!
At that point in time, some casual race fans may have thought the promising start and what looked like a great finish was lost for the night. However, fans that know David Cardey realized the show was about to begin. When the green flag would start the action again, Cardey had to restart at the back. What transpired over the final 23 laps was one of the most amazing drives in the track's 14-year history. Cardey sliced his was through the field using every inch of the racetrack. He passed cars high and he passed cars low. When the Eddie Ramirez checkered flag signaled an end to the proceedings after 30 laps, Cardey had passed 19 cars to finish third! And, he was challenging for second at the end.
Cardey's determined drive paid off big dividends. When the series resumes with the two-day Louie Vermeil Classic at Calistoga Speedway on Labor Day weekend, "Dynamite" David Cardey will have 22-point lead in the championship point standings.
