I always thought it was silly for the WoO to not count prelims as wins. Now I hear they are counting them but not before 07! The legendary hammer down action happened on the prelim nites before the tracks got dry and slow. The guy with the best stuff that kicked ass on the prelim nite would get outsmarted by Karl for the big money when the track got slick. The Luna Ford embarrassed everyone in prelim action many times and rung the tires the next night. The WoO should certainly go back and count them all.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I wonder if its because back in the day on a two night race, the top 4 drivers from the first night didn't have to qualify the second night. They started off in the heat races. The Outlaws have since changed that, don't remember what year they did though, maybe about the time of the WoO/NST split or a year or so before that.

Yes that is why. And also the preliminary nights were worth less points. Now technically there are no preliminary nights, as they are now all full points shows. Its still stupid, as the old preliminary nights had the same format as a regular one-night show, and thus just as hard to win.
It was changed at the beginning of 2007. The year after the WoO/NST split.

I posted my thoughts on this over a year ago. If preliminaries were to be counted since day one, Steve Kinser would have around 700 wins. This new "rule" gives the "newcomers" a huge advantage on breaking the win records of the greats such as Sammy and Doug. It's bullshit if you ask me!

I totally agree with you Hawker. They need to go back and count the wins from back then. The only ones that I could understand them not counting were shows where the fields were totally split(like the Gold Cup, etc.) Any show where all drivers had a chance for the win should be counted.
It makes what Steve Kinser has done that much more amazing. Imagine if he were given all of his prelim wins as well.

The prelims had A mains of about 20 laps usually and were a qualifying event.
The A mains that counted were more laps and the top 4 from the prelim night didn't have to time trial. Plus they would change formats from time to time.
This is now and that was then. So no way can you go back and count prelims as A main wins now. Sorry but they maybe could have done something a long time ago but didn't.

They had the same qualifying system as a one night show. Just because they were 20 laps means nothing. And just because four were locked into the next night means nothing. A win's a win and it should count. Its not like it was any easier to win on those nights.

One of my favorite "Luna Ford" wins was Fargo in about '94 Blaney passed both Steve and one other car on the last lap; pretty sure that happened or else I dreamed it. But, to elude to the 10 car pounding everyone on fast tracks is stretching it quite a bit. Blaney had a few "really good" years but otherwise I put the Luna Ford in the same basket as the other 2nd tier cars that were normally behind the Big 3. Also, the years I was paying attention, there were more Luna Fords in and out of those frame rails than anyone cared to keep track of; failure rate = high.
I do agree that the prelim wins should count; like someone already said, you accomplished more sometimes winning the first night from several rows back than starting on the front row the second night.

Those Luna guys went thru a lot of motors back then. Preliminary nights? I don't see anyone with today's competition what it is, where everybody has access to the same motor, ever winning 3 or 400 races. And if your on the WoO tour, you better not just have access to it, you better have it. Ya got guys in Timbuktoo,ND running $35,000 motors.
Adding $6 trillion of debt in his 1st term and now if
elected again he wouldn't have to worry about an
electorate in 2016 so the sky is the limit. And his EPA
would continue to put the screws to oil drilling and
mining for coal. Can you say bankruptcy.

The first 2 nights of the Gold Cup in Chico are, I believe, considered preliminary nights. And so would the first 3 nights of Knoxville, but the WoO no longer considers Knoxville a WoO point race.

You're right. He did go through lots of engines. Not as many as the chevy guys he whipped every night but still plenty.
