Brian Brown – Red Hot!

(Bill W) July 6, 2009 – Brian Brown was back in the winner's circle, not once, but twice, last weekend. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver took his third straight weekly 410 show at the Knoxville Raceway Saturday night, and polished off an ASCS-Midwest field at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska on Thursday. This weekend will see the SuperClean #21 competing at Twin Features Night at Knoxville.

Brian's third win did not come easy at Knoxville. After qualifying fourth, he faced a huge heat race. "We were able to turn a decent time and we've been working on that, but the key was the heat," he says. "We were starting fifth and had to finish fifth to make the invert. I was sweating bullets a bit. Lynton was beside us, and we had a lot of good cars in front of us and behind us. That was huge to get ahead of Lynton (finishing fifth) and start up front in the feature, instead of 16th or 17th."

Starting outside of row two for the 20-lap main event, Brian was amongst plenty of talent. "I was excited to line up beside Terry (McCarl), with Davey Heskin and Bronson Maeschen up front and (Kerry) Madsen and Dusty Zomer behind me," he says. "I wanted to see how we measured up. We had a good start. I wanted to get in front of Terry, before he did the same to us."

Brian battled with Zomer for third, while chasing early leader, Heskin and Maeschen. "We had a great race there with Dusty for third," he says. "We drove by each other, and I felt we'd get by Bronson Maeschen (second), but he broke in front of us."

The yellow flag was out for Maeschen, and Brian lined up second behind Heskin with eight to go. He would make the winning pass on lap 17. "During the caution, I felt we had a good shot to win it," he says. "Davey went to the middle and I kind of rode up top for three or four laps. He didn't do anything wrong, I just changed my line the last couple laps, and we were able to get by."

Brian had plenty of help on his way to the $3,000 payday and a spot at the top of the point standings at Knoxville. "It's good to get SuperClean, Ditzfeld Transfer, FaxMeService.com, Searsboro Telephone Company, Maxim and all our great partners another big win," he says. "I think our hard work all year is starting to pay off. This is the hardest part of the season, and we need to keep our elbows up and go for championships."

Thursday, Brian visited the banked 3/8 mile oval in Nebraska. "I-80 has always been a place I've loved to race at," he adds. "We ran well in the heat. We had a brand new Maxim over there, and our new motor with the Tim Engler injection on it. He's doing a great job with that, and it's the best 360 injection going period right now."

After winning his heat from third, Brian lined up fourth for the 25-lap main event. "I was feeling confident heading into the feature," he says. "We were able to split a couple of cars and get to second on the first lap. (Early leader Doug) Lovegrove was doing a good job around the bottom, and the track uncharacteristically had a big cushion. Normally it just slicks to the wall, but maybe it was because of all the modifieds and late models there."

Brian moved to the point on lap five, but got a late scare around lap 15. "A couple of times, I thought the cushion was going to eat us up," he says. "Once we got in the lead, we were doing what we thought we needed to do to win. Finally, I got caught behind some lapped cars, and Jack Dover reeled us in."

Brian was able to fend off Dover for his fifth career win at I-80. "He pulled a good slider on us, and we were able to get back under him with one of our own," says Brian. "It was pretty much clear sailing from there on out. We had a caution with four to go, and I changed my line and the way I was driving a bit. It's always fun going to I-80. The Kosiski's do a great job there."

It will be a big night for the Brian Brown SuperClean #21 team on Saturday night, with Twin Features looming. "You can't win the championship on Twin Features Night, but if you get locked out, you can definitely lose it," says Brian.

Brian's Q&A

Don Henderson from Ottumwa, IA asks: Besides your Uncle, who were some of the guys you admired for their driving style when you were traveling with him?

Brian answers: Obviously, Steve Kinser has always been the man. The things he could do in the car were always awesome to me, but when I got into a car myself, they were even more impressive. I always enjoyed watching Doug Wolfgang too. He was a hero of mine. His career was cut short, and who knows how many records he would have now if it weren't? He always kept his car so nice and straight, and that's what I try to do too.

Darn. Any idea on the other drivers you do PR for (Alley, Wayne, Hockett)? I figured we'd see a few of these guys, especially with how fast Hockett was in the May IRA show.
