I grew up watching the show and remember some great races from then, especially the old Terre Haute shows. It was that show that made me the Gary Bettenhausen fan I am today. Where is all of that great footage? How can we get it? I would pay top dollar for it!

you'd think that since ABC owns ESPN & all of their channels that they would put it on "Classic"..especially now that they have some Napcar ties & are racing experts!!!! i still like the guy falling off the end of the ski jump!!!

Think about all the races that were shown locally. I read in an old OKC program that one of the stations did a tape delay broadcast of the '69 nationals at the fairgrounds. Think of all the ads on tv that promoted upcoming specials too. I would like to stand in line for those tapes too.

Hawker, there is a tape called "Dirt Trackin, Hoosier Style" from Dick Wallen thats main focus is Terre Haute. I know it is not complete race footage but definately shows some awesome NON-WING highlights. I also have a tape from, I think 1975 from Terre Haute that ABC done. One race had a driver do several flips (can't remember his name) and his head hit the steering wheel so hard it showed his helmet fly off.
I know it is not Terre Haute but I have a copy of the '82 4-Crown Nationals at Eldora where it shows Steve K. coming from the back in both the Silver Crown and Sprint features.
And finally just for you, several years ago Carson made me a copy of the old '72-73 ORA produced film from OKC and covers Jackie Howerton and his last night at the fairgrounds before he moved to Indy. It is about two hours long and covers alot of stuff from those two years. Also have 1959 Taft Stadium highlights that show the old Jolopies.
Lastly, there is a tape I have that is a biography of Harold Leep and a tape that covers Muskogee and the old Tulsa Speedway from the late 60's and early 70's. I know it isn't what you asked for as far as ABC and the old Terre Haute races but I know this is up your alley too.

I remember NBC"s short-lived program "SPORTS-WORLD" that was broadcast on Sundays, showing the USAC midgets(taped) from the famed Reading Fairgrounds in 1979. For those historians, you might remember that this program was the first to show the "KNOXVILLE NATIONALS" on a Sunday in 1979.. I believe it was live.. I do remember it being a dry and dusty day affair.

I don't think it was the Nationals, I think it was the first show of the year.
Scheduled for a Sunday afternoon because of poor lights, and in early April because of the need for cool temps.
Seems like we had a record HOT and sunny day and so much dust it looked like a Ted Johnson WoO show.

Thanks for the info David. Only one question though. How much for a copy of the OCRA/Howerton footage and the Muskogee/Tulsa footage????????? I'm serious!!!
I was a HUGE Howerton fan. I was there the last night he ran Tulsa and I was there the night he came back for a "homecoming" of sorts from USAC and ran the Zink "Batmobile" and beat Hahn in a 1 - 2 Zink finish. That was at, what I call the "old, old" Tulsa Speedway, the 3/8 mile track that is where the parking lot is now at the fairgrounds.
