TJ Hartman Racing -UPDATE
- Appreciation
Puyallup, WA - June 6, 2009...
TJ was
involved in an opening lap crash this weekend at the Grays Harbor
Raceway that destroyed his entire race car. The scary incident
was caught on video by Aaron Reed, and can be viewed by clicking on the
following link:

TJ is at home and resting comfortably now. Initially he responded
well to emergency personnel evaluation on the track, but lost his
vision for a short time following the crash. An immediate
decision was made to transport him via ambulance from the track for
more evaluation. Upon returning home early Sunday morning, he
started developing further head concussion type symptoms, and was taken
to the ER at Good Samaritan hospital in Puyallup. A CT scan
showed no immediate problems, and Dr's ordered monitoring of him
closely until the symptoms subside.
Our family and team want to thank the safety crew, EMT's, and wrecker
teams for their patience in treating TJ. We want to thank all of
those that have called and sent messages of support. Above all
else, we want to thank the makers of TJ's chassis and safety gear for
bringing him home to us. While the car is completely destroyed,
the cockpit of his Maxim Chassis remained intact, his Butlerbuilt seat
protected him like a cacoon, his Hooker Harness safety belts held him
tight from beginning to end. The Hans device he wore proved it's
value beyond compare, and his Simpson helmet deflected what could have
been a catastrophic outcome as he encountered a concrete retaining wall
and catch fence with the roll cage.
We are indebted to each of you and your role in protecting our child,
friend, and loved one. At this time our focus is on getting TJ
healthy before making any further racing plans for the year. The
car was destroyed, and he does have a backup car and spare parts.
We did suffer a significant setback in some damage to our lone engine
in the incident, and we will evaluate that once we get TJ's brain to
stop swishing around in his head.
He is a little sore, but in good spirits, and in his own words, would
race tomorrow if we let him. Perhaps the greatest debt we owe is
to Jimmy Sills, who taught TJ the many aspects of driving and working
on a sprint car - but also taught us the most important thing - protect
your head at all costs. And if that means sitting out for a time
until he is completely healthy, then so be it.
