I was watching the Vs. Network coverage of the ASCS series this weekend (thanks mother nature) and it was the first time I had seen their version of a non-qualifying show. they ran like 10 heats and 4 b mains. My first thought was how weird is this? Then i got to thinking as a fan this is awesome, more racing for my buck. Just wondering how everyone else felt about this, both fans and racers.

We have done alot of racing under this format. It's great. Race your way into the show. Shure there are always going to be detractors to any format as not all are perfect. You get to race alot and that is what we go for. The fast guys always get to the front somehow and put on a good show for the fans.

Seems like the ASCS format would be hard for the fans to track in stands with the point system.

That was my exact thought while I was watching it. Here there were over 80 something cars, and with 10 heats that had 8 or more cars each. Then in some heats cars that finished in first and fourth had enough points to move into the main. Were as in other heats cars that finish second didnt transfer. A person would have to write down the entire starting order, and the finshing order.

with the "standard system" it's easy for fans sitting in the stands to see where the battle for the last transfer spot is. In most heat races, that's what I usually watch. With the ASCS format, who knows where that battle is? I like the idea of passing points, but using that format makes it harder for the fans to follow. What about a hybrid system, where the top 3 cars in 4 heat races transfer, along with the two cars who had the most passing points who aren't yet qualified into the feature?

I like qualifying. That is what I grew up with and of course that is why I get to the track early for hot laps. I enjoy watching the driver go for it. My father was an auto mechanic and loved to listen to the engines during hot laps and qualifying. Qualifying is the traditional way.

I have seen both formats several times as I am still a fan of qualifying. Yes, in the ASCS the fast guys do get to the front but I still like the old fashion qualfying format, with heats and transfer spots. It's alot easier to follow in the stands. I also think it's easier for the drivers to follow as well.

Easier for the driver to follow is the problem. As a fan I want to see the drivers trying to make it to the front, not hang out in 4th because they're in a transfer spot.

Not to bash everyone but if you like qualifing because it is the old way then why not also use a full invert for heats and the main like the old way...

That wouldn't bother me at all. The full invert is exciting, but sadly I don't think we will ever see it again with the sprint cars.

I've seen enough qualifying to last a lifetime, and "invert 6, take 5" heat races are dull. I say line up the cars and race your way into the main event. A points system like ASCS has might get complicated, but a good announcer like Troy Henning, Bill Sullivan or Bobby Gerould would help fans keep track of things.

Most hardcore racers and fans have attended Trophy Cup, yes you q-fy the first nite but everything after that is points, points, points, points, go fast and turn left. It's kind of a mix of the two systems. The fast guys are still fast and upfront at the end. Don't tell me that format sucks cause that place is way to fun to criticise. So whats so hard to understand, Mash the throttle and turn left.

I watched the ASCS race from Devil's Bowl and the heat races were no different than WoO or any other 410 event. Front row winner in each race and very little passing. Didn't see much difference to me. Even the four B mains had a front row winner. Several top drivers didn't make the A main due to the non qualifying format. The WoO heat races are exciting as there is two battles, 1) the battle to finish in the top two for the dash and 2) the finish in the top five to make the A main.

As an avid sprint car fan in the middle of ASCS NW country, I`ve been dealing with this format every time I go to a race since it started. I don`t mind saying that I miss the old way. First off, I miss qualifying...pill draws don`t do it for me. they say it speeds things up. During the heats, I used to enjoy the race inside the race for the transfer spot. Now we have no idea where that is until ALL heats are completed. Then they eliminated the dashes, instead they parade all the drivers to the front straight for another pill draw. to set the field for the A main. Reasoning no need for wasting fuel and speeding up the show. When they have big events with good car counts. They did away with C, D mains now they just have multipal b mains, eliminating any chance for those alphabet runs. Well they have sped up the show so the A main is often completed before dark and still has a lot of down time. The powers that be have been adding a filler class lately. But we see less sprint car racing. And if you make the move to ASCS, there is no varying from this format.

Oakland, exactly!
More racing does not always equate to better racing. Case in point, that ASCS event. Front row won seemingly every race. Start 3rd and finish 3rd only to be pit side for the A Feature seems punitive.
Every format has it's pro's and cons, none are perfect. Just hope no matter the sanction/series/event, one at least enjoys the racing provided.
