I don’t know what’s going on. I’m so green I wouldn’t know great
driving if it ran me over. I did see some Midgets Saturday night that
twisted me. They got a sound that gets somewhere between the back of
your eardrum and the base of your skull and it just rips. Never got to
stretch my legs out at Manzanita and now it’s gone like a dream when
you just woke up. The moon rises over Ventura and the ghosts of tracks
crashed and burned drift just above the grandstands. People associate
tracks with youth, fathers and all sorts of memories that never get
sorted out. I see kids running through the grandstands in their driving
suits laughing and playing with their friends. I never feel so safe as
when I am at the track. But it’s an illusion; there is nowhere as
dangerous as a racetrack. You can sometimes glimpse it in the shadows,
in the tone of the announcer’s voice, it’s lurking in the turns. It’s
looking for your best friend, it’s looking for me and it’s pretending
everything goes on forever…. Continue story
