Haven't tried this approach, but it explains a lot. Listen up-
A game of golf, case of beer, maybe a hunting trip---that kinda thing.
There are a few sports editors out there that tend to find new interests when these things come along. That's not to say that every story gets in that way, but there is a momentum. Bribery?! No, just competing for the inkspace. Too much, is way too obvious.
The next time you ask yourself "why" they won't leave a story alone, THINK ABOUT IT.
Hate to say it but- There are only a few true thinkers in every crowd on a given subject. The rest are sheep that think the way they are influenced to think. ----------We are ALL, at some point, somewhere, members of the sheepherd.
MARKETING PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!
Readers/viewers aren't going to think the racers are ten feet tall, unless the media tells them to. Inspiring the media starts with "one" person, in the right place, with the right influence.
--------------AND YA' DAMN WELL BETTER HAVE SOMETHING AWESOME ON THE TABLE WHEN IT'S TIME TO BE LOOKED OVER. ***A positive, honest attitude is one hell of a start.---------This last sentence has been working for me. Thankfully I haven't had to worry about "fringe benefits". But in my case, I've been a barker for the things I'm wanting to see, and seeing a bunch of supers sling dirt is MY payoff.
So, it comes to this, either it's "fringe benefits", OR bringing them something they WANT to be a part of, a connection money does not buy. Most likely, the answer is a combination of all things instead of one, tailored for the times. If they are talking about your era 30 years from now, then that means something was done right.
Just an opinion.
