Is it just me or this board already showing signs of a slow down? The first few days seemed fine but yesterday and today seem to be rather sluggish? Maybe its all of Nodust's post doing it.

Hawker,

I have a pretty fast DSL connection and have been pretty satisfied with my Internet performance. Today I did some comparison msg board surfing and see major differences in page load times. I used Indianaopenwheel.com and Midgetmadness.com boards to judge some performance and click for click, both of them blow the doors off this one!

This board has lots of overhead the other 2 don't have and personally I don't like what I see here. I know, if you don't like it don't come back. I just want to point out the fact there are lots of passive readers of these forums that will agree with me here. There's only a small cross section of people who want or will use all the bells and whistles here. The majority are readers who just want to read what's going on in the Sprint Car & Midget world. Infact, a lot of people I have spoken with will not post at all because they feel they will be chastised for what they might say. Now I am just say'n, lets here from some of the passive readers I am speaking of and lets see what the vast majority thinks about this.

Jeff, I know you are monitoring this pretty closely and please don't take offense to what I am pointing out. I know you worked on putting this together but I really do feel I have had a valid point for quite some time.

How come you never have anything good to say?

All the features here have been requested by users of these forums.

I did some comparison test using a web page speed tester

Here are the results

Indiana Open Wheel forum loads in 43.41 seconds on a ISDN line
Midget Madness forum loads in 8.37 seconds on a ISDN line
HoseHeadforums loads in 15.82 seconds on a ISDN line

Note : ISDN line is slower then a DSL line

The difference at DSL speed is only 1 second between the Midget Madness forum and this forum.
Not much of a difference in speed if you ask me.

Jeff

I have cable at 5 mbps, so everything runs fast. This site loads as quick for me as the other message boards that I visit. One thing you have to take into account is the amount of traffic that this site sees. Remember, Hoseheads.com in the off season is getting around 10k page views per day. If Hoseheads is like the Lake Ozark Speedway website that I maintain, the message board has at least twice the pageviews per day that the main webpage has. I also know that for every person that posts here that there are something like 8 lurkers.

BTW, I just cleared my cache and cookies and this page loaded in under 5 seconds for me...

Hey, I'm on dial up and I got no problem with this board. It's fast enough for me. I don't use the "bells & whistles" either but kinda enjoy seeing what others on here can do with them. I'm just happy to have a place like this to get info, rumors and results.

But some are just not happy with anything.

Thanks for all the work you put into this Jeff.

Whatever you say Jeff. I'm just calling it as I'm seeing it from MY connection. Remember results can vary and everyone does not get the same performance! Can you provide any stats on actually how many people post v. the actual # of readers daily? I would be very interested in those #'s but you will never publish that will you?

The numbers you quoted most have no clue as to what you are even talking about. I do understand and personally know the #'s are gonna widely vary so your #'s cannot be taken as any benchmark as to what is better.

Hawker, I totally agree with you. Please signon to AOL, I would like to IM with you a bit. Most don't even go to the main site daily and have the msg board bookmarked! I think I have made my point so I will let it rest.

my test was done by a third party tester. So it does not consider my connection.

Just for you Steve I added one more feature back. The users online.
You can see it on the home page http://www.hoseheadforums.com
This is the count of all the users on the forums at any one time.

And yet we only hear from the same people who have something to say about everything. That's something I already knew, lots of people viewing and very few posting. Wait, I think I mentioned that before. Lightning fast is not 5-7 seconds when clicking on the back button or clicking on new thread link. One thing I will mention now its seems to be alot faster now at 12:20am for some reason????? It was never this fast most of the day at the various times I was on today. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm. Server rebooted?

We used to wait a week for racing papers to arrive to get race results now some can not wait 5 - 7 seconds to read a thread. Wow!

Who cares if 10,000 read and only 100 post?

Simple fix. If you don't like it, find anouther message board. Or maybe Steve could host a lightning fast board on his website!?!?

Hey, I was just pointing out something that was happening yesterday while using the board. I guess you did not read my last post indicating it was much faster for some reason. It's much better this morning and lets hope it continues.

Oswold, you missed the point completley. Your analogy about waiting for racing papers was a 90's comparison but from someone still stuck on dialup, I can understand.

Now that this seems to be fixed at the moment, I will say what happened with this thread is why the ratio of posters here is so huge. The less than 60 posters here beat up on anyone who posts something that doesn't agree with them so bad they won't post again or even ever. That's pretty sad.

As far as hosting a board on my site, its never gonna happen. I tried it years ago but its just too much work and too much crap to monitor. I don't do what I do on my site for any kind of profit at all. If you want to give me a hard time about making an valid observation so be it.

Jeff you asked for feedback, you got it buddy. I'm sorry it was not what you wanted to here but I am not the average person who knows little about computer technology and just accepts what I see here as the norm. Those who don't know any better think its all good, that's fine.

I don't think there is anybody beating anybody up here. Oswald had a valid observation just like you had am observation. It is just some oberservations are valid and some aren't. It probaly is loading faster for you because you restarted your computer. Oswald states he is on dial up and it loads just fine. Just because he is on dial up doesn't mean he is behind times. In some places that is all that is available. I have also tested this on dial up and it loaded fine for me also.
So if you are on dsl you probably should see what is wrong with your connection. or you computer.

I remember when you tried to start a forum. You tried to get everyone from here to come to your forum and it failed. You need to get over it.

Thanks
Jeff

Mine is slow too. I get into the main page at normal speed, but, anything I do inside the message board is extremely slow. PUT THOSE WHIPS AWAY PEOPLE, I'm not complaining. As long as I can get in I'm pretty happy. And, thru painful experience, I know that 9 times outta 10 when I have a problem it's usually caused by the provider doing something on their end. My entire internet has slowed down....just about the time this new board was introduced. I've called Comcast and they say I should have no problem in my area, but I've heard that before. I sent in a message to their help desk last night but haven't heard back as yet. I went in and did a defrag, removed unused programs and files, downloaded a lot of porn, and managed to increase my free space from 43 to 49% and still running slow.

The New Board loads way slower on my computer than the Old Board did.

But at least there are no Pop-Ups!

One feature I wish this board had is a "Next Newest Thread" button.

I prefer the format of Delphi's forums and really liked the last version of Stan's Minnesota Dirt Track Racing .

I really like that the newest posts/replies on here appear near the top. Too bad the anchor thread don't go away after you read them.

I disagree with this. For every person who posts something that isn't overwhelmingly agreed with, I've seen people on both sides of the issue. I think it's pretty rare that anyone is honestly attacked or ganged up on here. And I say this as a person who has been called fat and ugly on this board. Every single time I've posted something that didn't go over well, there have been people arguing with me and people supporting me. I've been on boards where nobody "beats up on" anybody, and what happens there? No conversation whatsoever. If everyone agrees with everyone, there's nothing to talk about anymore.

>>Those who don't know any better think its all good, that's fine.

Please don't insinuate that those of us who don't see problems here are merely ignorant. More than likely, we're just not *looking* for problems.
