How was he even eligible? According to the updates on Pushin the Cushion, top 2 in the heats get to draw for starting positions in the dash. Schatz finished 3rd in his heat.

New rule in 2009. All dash starters draw for position. Schatz and McCarl advanced to dash as the two fastest cars to transfer to A main.

they changed the rule this year kinda gay but oh well

I like the new rule. Otherwise there was no advantage to being quick time. The farthest up you could start was 9th in the dash unless you made it up to 2nd in the heat. Keeps people from sandbaging the time trials just to make the front row of the heat.
