I know there are "no rules" at the Chili Bowl, but some of the car swapping this year got a little out of hand. Chris Burns came out for hot laps Thursday in an orange number 7C with DeShields sponsorship on the hood. One or two laps and up the ramp. Come heat race time, he's in a BLACK 7C with green trim and no apparent sponsorship. That's what he ran the rest of the night. Saturday, Big Orange is back out there. I have no idea how many different cars Johnny Murdoch sent out with various drivers.....it was like he was building more of them during the week...but Friday he blew one up and raced another later on. Maybe he needed to race for the appearance money. Maybe some others were swapping cars without me noticing. Now, I'm delighted that Chris got to race, but where's this going? Anybody else bothered by the logical end of this? Kenny Weld, when he drove for Weikert, had three cars at his disposal. He used to say he'd walk into the shop on race morning and ask them "which one of you sumb****'s wants to race tonight?" He didn't take more than one girl to the dance, and he didn't stick his number on somebody else's car if his broke.
Enough old cranky stuff. They weren't showing lap times on the board this year, but during the 'D' main Saturday, on a fresh track, some cars were lapping at just over 10 seconds. Wonder what Sammy's best lap on the week was?
