Brian Brown – Weekend Down Under!
(Bill W) November 26, 2008 – Brian Brown didn't make it to the Knoxville Raceway banquet last Saturday night, but he had a good excuse. He was in Western Australia racing with the World Series Sprintcars organization. A two-night stop for the series at the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach saw Brian get his elbows up for a podium finish on the final night.
Brown was the lone American competing on the WSS Western swing. "Wayne Priddy was down there to help me with Greg Fisher's car," says Brian of his opportunity in Fisher's #15. "Wayne was there a day early, to get some work done on the car. I showed up on Friday."
An oversight and a slick track plagued Brian in a time trial effort that registered 28th on Friday. "The track was slick in the straights, and for some reason we had the wrong wing post in, so I couldn't slide it back," says Brian. "So we had to qualify with the wing forward, and we were spinning the wheels all the way around."
The troubles continued for Brian in his heat while out in front on the less than 1/3 mile oval. "A nozzle line came off while we were leading," he explains. "We were two for two with our bad luck at that point!" He adds, "We were able to win our second heat and then run from 13th to 4th in the B."
The run set him up starting 13th in Friday's main event. "We were getting through there pretty well and got up to sixth," he says. "We broke an inboard brake pad, and we backed up to ninth at the finish. It was kind of one of those nights, that if something bad could happen, it did. For all that happened, it wasn't a bad night to finish ninth."
Saturday, it was all systems go, as Brian grew accustomed to Fisher's sprinter. He qualified 17th. "We didn't qualify great there, but still it put us in better condition than Friday," he says. "We were able to run second (from fifth) and first (from sixth) in the heats so that put us in the B dash."
The packed track was watered before dash, and the cars became water bugs on the slick surface. "Brooke (Tatnell) and I started on the front row, and that water was like it would be on concrete," says Brian. "We went into one and two, and it was like one kid went down on the ice skating rink in front of the others and the other ones struggling to get around him. We struggled to fourth."
Starting eighth in the feature wasn't ideal, but Brian made the most of it, and finished on the podium behind Tatnell and Ian Loudoun. "Our dash really hurt us, because track position was really important on Saturday," he says. "Starting eighth put us back, but we were able to get up to third, where we finished. We passed a lot of good cars, and it was fun racing for Greg."
Brian hopes to return to Australia later this winter. "I hope we can get back over there with Greg in January," he says. Meanwhile, he'll head to the Springfield Raceway in southern Missouri seeking the $2,000 top prize in the Turkey Open Wheel Classic.

Larry Stier asks: What cost cutting rules do you think have helped the sport, and what more can be done?
Brian answers: I think the cost cutting measures that have worked center on the tires. Going to a one-tire-a-night rule has saved us buying one extra tire every night. Ideally, the Outlaws, and everyone really, should go to the hardest tire that Hoosier makes, the SC25 on the right rear, and the D12 on the left. The bad side of tire rules is we have 20 associations with 20 different rules. That's bad news for a guy like me, who runs a lot of different organizations. We need a nationwide rule, which probably is not going to happen, and will probably make Hoosier mad, because they make money on different types of tires.

Brian's recent trip "Down Under" saw him compete in his 24th and 25th career features there. In his 25 starts, he's grabbed two wins, 11 top fives (44%) and 17 top tens (68%). According to www.OpenWheelTimes.com, he's competed at twelve different tracks in Australia, covering five provinces (South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Western Australia). His biggest win was arguably his $10,000 triumph at the Rolling Thunder Raceway in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria on January 3, 2006. There, he topped Luch Monte, Daryn Pittman, Troy Little and Jason Johnson for the cash.
