Missouri Native rolls car, escapes serious injury.

Jerry Richert Jr posted his first feature win at Owatonna, Tuesday night he added another victory at the Steele County Fairgrounds track.

The Forest Lake, Minn resident held the lead the final 11 laps to win the Sprint Car Spectacular. The race was held in conjunction with the Steele County Free Fair, and the feature was marred by a rollover by Danny Lasoski of Dover, Mo.

Richert, who won the sprint car feature in Owatonna in 1982, earned $3,500.00 for winning this year's race plus another $550.00 in lap money.

"This track generally gets to be a one-roove race track," Richert said of the half-mile dirt track. "And if you can pass, you're fast."

Thanks to an accident during the feature, Richert never had to pass a car during the finale. He started in the second row of the 20 lap main event. Lasoski and Ray Lipsey of Lincoln, Neb, started in the front row and the pair held the top two spots through the first nine laps.

But on lap #10, Lasoski rolled his car on the north turn. He went right over the top of the four foot high cement barrier and then proceeded to bust through a wooden fence on top of the barrier. Lasoski's car piled into a Case Catapillar, and moved the heavy machine a foot.

"I caught the tail end of it," Richert said of the wipeout, "I just saw when he went outside of the track,"

Lipsey was in second at the time, and he turned to avoid Lasoski, and crashed into the wall.

"He was rolling right ahead of me," Lipsey said, "so I spun so I wouldn't hit him."

Both drivers were forced to leave the race, Lipsey was not hurt, but Lasoski was taken to Health Central of Owatonna for x-rays, and his status was not known at press time. He just avoided serious injury however as a big gash was ripped into his safety helmet. He was moving and talking when he was taken to the hospital.

Most of the drama of the race was gone after the crash. Richert was in first place when the race resumed, and his lead was never threatened.

"I just used up as much race track as I could," the 27 year old said of holding off his challengers.

Rocky Hodges of Brownsburg, Ind was second and took home $2,000.00. Randy Smith from Mt.Ayr, Iowa, was third and picked up $1,500.00, Glen Berkner of Sleepy Eye, Min was forth, $1,000.00 followed by Tim Munson of Lakeville, Minn, $800.00.

Hodges won the first heat race, Lasoski won the second and Richert the third. Hodges also had the fastest lap in time trials, covering the half-mile distance in just :19.31 seconds, Smith had the next fastest time at :19.35

Race promoter Brian Madsen of Blooming Prairie, Minn estimated the crowd at about 2,000.

That was the chalk race too I believe where the official in turn 4 put down about 400 pounds of chalk for a starting line. Blew into the stands all night!

I believe that was the eve of the Knoxville Nationals...Lasoski attended the Nationals but could not drive due to injuries to his left shoulder.

You are correct Mike,,, It was the Tuesday before the Nationals started,,,, I was thinking about it after reading the newspaper report,, I believe,, and bear in mind I'm starting to get a little fuzzy on what happened almost 20 years ago now,,(I think that it is caused by kids!!) but I believe that I was wrong in my original note taking on JrJr's car owner,, I think that Jerry was driving for a Stewert?? Glenn maybe....

I know that there is a picture of Jr hanging in the Fair office with the caption that he won 20 years to the day that his father also won at the Steele County Fair races....

There were some other neat things that I had stashed away fromt hese two shows, (the next year Lasoski came back and won),, like sign in sheets,,, I know one of the autographs on it was from one of the Daniels boys watching from the pits that night,,, don't remember if it was Itch or Scratch,,, Ol Bob Trostle is on there as well as Jr Senior.....

I think both you guy's have natural fuzziness, you can't blame it on old age or too many bangs in the head from a roll cage !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Holiday's everyone

If it was a #70 sprinter Brian, it likely was owned by Glenn Stewart. I did not attend the 1989 fair race, but I certainly do recall hearing about the Dude's accident when I arrived at the Knoxville Nationals the next night. Forbrook had the car there, but the Dude could not drive. By the way, Jerry Richert, Jr. won the Nonqualifers race that year at the Nationals driving the Phil Durst #1x Burger King sprinter. Also, I believe Jerry Richert, Sr's first Steele County Fair win came in August of 1964...25 years prior to Sonny's win on that date in 1989.
