Why does the WoO continue to swing back and forth accross the country? Wouldn't it work better for everybody, if they tried to work south to north, or east to west, or at least something somewhat coherent? Think of the combines following the wheat harvest. There's a reason they don't run this way and that way.

From what I remember the WoO schedule almost always has several events on each swing in any direction.
A return to the same general region later in the year makes all the sense in the world marketing wise even if it does not seem good from a travel perspective.
That issue is a lot more complicated than it looks at a glance.

The combines are forced into their pattern by Mother Nature. The crops in the South mature first, and then they work they way North as the grain rippens.

And most of the tracks have "traditional" dates, that they'd like to keep....Kings Royal week, Knoxville Nationals week, Gold Cup week.....Which kind of limits the alternate scheduling date options to reduce the interstate travel for the WoO...hence, the gypsy routine.... which was really adverselt affected by rain this year.....
