Brown Wins In Wonderland
Down the Rabbit Hole
The highly anticipated USAC-CRA race at Ventura went off last Saturday
with a few hitches. Most notable were two track stopping crashes
including sprint car driver Rob Bunker and Ford Focus driver Michael
Burba. Bunker exited under his own power but Burba’s crash was
particularly nasty and put him in the hospital. His helmet was
reportedly split and he accelerated unconscious into the turn wall full
metal jacket. Five days later I spoke to him in his Anaheim hospital
room and he sounded remarkably snappy. He remembers little after
hitting a car in turn one. They induced a coma for three days to
protect against a brain swelling concussion. The race was his first in
a Ford Focus and he says it won’t be his last, though it’s too early to
draw any conclusions. His mother tells me his progress is a miracle and
if you saw the crash, you know that’s true. It must be a remarkable
trip from the light down into some dark hole and then to find your way
back again….
