Brian Brown – Rolling in Little Rock!
(Bill W) October 29, 2008 – Brian Brown put an exclamation point his successful month of October with another pair of top three finishes at the Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, Arkansas. After finishing second on Friday, he followed that up with a third place finish among a 96-car field in the finale on Saturday. Brian will prep the SuperClean #21 for 2009, before taking to Australia in a couple of weeks for a brief foray over there.
Brian went from fourth to second in his heat race Friday, and then sixth to second in the qualifier. "Whenever you go to a passing point deal, drawing a good number is important," says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. "You don't want to be in the very front, but you don't want to be in the back either. Running well in the qualifier was huge, because that put us on the front row of the feature."
With the top three finishers locked into Saturday night's finale, Brian knew the heat was on in the 25-lap feature. He ran most of the way in second, but in arguably the best racing of the weekend, four cars vied for two spots behind Tim Crawley, who dusted the field for the win. "The feature was a barnburner to say the least from second to sixth," says Brian. "Crawley obviously had everyone covered all weekend. There were times I was running second, times I was running fifth, and times I was running third. In the end, we were second."
The second place run came after a late pass of Garry Lee Maier, who ran second for much of the show. "We were able to get by Garry Lee there on the bottom with about three to go, and that was big because it took us off the bubble for a transfer," says Brian. "For a while, I was the guy everyone was shooting at. It's about being in position, and we put ourselves there with that finish."
After receiving a starting spot outside row one of the Pack Dash for Cash on Saturday, Brian went backwards to finish fifth. "We wanted to tighten up more than we did for the dash," he says. "I kind of talked myself out of it. We've kind of been going for broke with setups since we took over ownership, and we've been either really good or really bad. I got a little bit conservative on that one, and if you're off a little bit, guys like Crawley, Wayne Johnson and my uncle are going to make you look silly real quick. Ultimately, it could have cost me the win in the final."
Brian would start fourth in the finale after Johnson, who finished second in the dash, elected to take the Comp Cams challenge. "Hindsight is 20/20, but the dash really hurt us," says Brian. "We tightened it up for the A main, and actually (eventual winner) Tony Bruce Jr. and I raced side by side for a few laps there. I thought I had him cleared a time or two. He did a great job and is one of the most improved drivers in America the last couple of years. You can tell he's been out with the Outlaws."
After trying to race for position, Brian yielded to the one-lane track conditions and settled for a respectable third at the checkers. "I got in behind Bruce and then Gary Wright got by me," he says. "I decided then it was time to protect the bottom, and that's where we finished. It made for a good finish to the weekend, and Chad, Cody and Glen did a great job. We definitely had a good weekend considering the competition we were racing against. To come home third out of 96 cars is a pretty good accomplishment for our team."

Brandon Murphy in Yagoona, NSW, Aust. asks: I heard you are racing in Australia. What are the details?
Brian answers: We're going over for three nights to run for Greg Fisher with the World Series Sprintcars. We'll run at Perth Motorplex in Kwinana Beach (WA) on November 21 and 22, Kalgoorlie (WA) on November 26, and then we'll be coming back. If everything goes well, we'll probably go back and drive for Greg in January. We have a lot to do for 2009, so we'll be working hard on that. That doesn't leave much time to jetset to Australia, as we'll be starting up again in January or February.

Since Brian has taken over ownership of the SuperClean #21, he has really picked up steam. He has competed at 12 events and finished in the top five (9) in each race he has finished. Most have come against some very stiff competition. His four wins in that time have all come in series' finales: the WOW at Moberly, Missouri, the NCRA at Wichita, Kansas, the Sprint Invaders in West Burlington, Iowa, and at the 1st Annual Cowtown Nationals which closed the season for the ASCS-Sooner region.
