I don't know if it was black or not. I was told it was Earnest's. Whoever built it did a fine job. However it is heavy as a tank at the hitch!

Stan, I knew you could think of more , Junior and Randall and Slagle and I forgot Howell lived on the southside before he moved to Waurika , America , I thought Gillam might make ya laugh, now there was a character, never won a trophy dash at Lawton that he did not pick up the trophy and carry her around after he kissed her, Good ol Richard #100 "The Outhouse Mouse" Car.

Yey Stan , I remember some of those stories as well.

Brian , Now I remember when the gray hairs started as a car owner , LOL, We had a hell of a lot of fun then.

Can any one tell me the name of the guard lion that was at Richard Gilliam's salvage yard. I have a photo with the lion laying by Doc Doan when he worked there. Doc was a good friend of my dad and I. We raced go karts together in the 1960's.

Did this thing used to roar at night? Where was that salvage yard located?

Brian,

It was known as D & R Salvage, 315 SW McKinley Ave. Yes, he used to roar at night, and sure used to stink! I sure would like to get his name. Did get in contact with Earl Hall. I still hope to come to the get together on the 7th, depends on my folks.

Milo! Thanks

Just curious, what does a stinking junkyard lion smell like anyway?

I can see it well, just thinking about it---

If this was like the '60s or '70s, that lion would basically be guarding the local speedshop otherwise known as a junkyard! No roof over the merchandise, no alarm, just a lion that enjoys a little 'cat and mouse', or should I say 'cat and car parts thief'!

Lot of lounges in Lawton back in those days, and late at night a driver down on his luck might stumble in one thinking about what he might need to run next saturday night. Every once in a while that old lion gives out a roar reminding him that the yard is closed at the moment...................unless he's stupid.

Keep an eye on that car. Turns out THOSE cars have the most popularity nationwide when it comes to vintage race cars. Most were crushed, and very few if any are being cut up these days. You'd be amazed at the crowd you'd draw at a street rod show! You only have to do it once to see what I mean. People get tired of chrome, billet, and high dollar paint jobs that say "don't drive me, I'll get scratched". They keep looking for ideas and just to see what is current- but a' past the point of no return dirt track coupe' reaches down into that little kid inside that wants to have a blast!

Whats really cool is to park it next to a black, flamed '32 roadster. After all the moolah he has spent to build his dream car, he has to sit there and watch you draw a bigger crowd. The first time I saw that happen was in '97 or '98 at OkC. I knew then that these cars were coming back. Ironically, the MORE trailer queens on the lot, the more of a draw your old beat up, rusted coupe is. Maybe it's the genuine hot rod theme that is doing it, I don't know. It's kinda like the car says "get a helmet and a tetanus shot and we could do some laps!

Right now I am lucky enough to have my Dad's old coupe,'33 chevy. I am so busy with it and a supermod that I'm getting ready for this year. My shop is a carport and my worktable is sometimes the ground.

These are my babies and money is always tight.

I really meant what I said here. We are moving into a time of "fake traditional" aftermarket wise across the board. The real thing is always appropriate.

I live in Walters, Oklahoma. Its a coupe. The guy told me it was a 34 chevy but I think its around a 32 model. Its got like a 235 6 cylinder and and old 4 speed in it now. If i keep it I will put a v8 and powerglide. Steve

I really wish you hadn't told me that! Now I'm kicking myself!

Does it look like this? This is a '33 chevy.

Or this- a '32 Chevy.

Notice the '32 is more vertical and square with the top.

If you put a 230- or a 250 inline 6 in there, you'd have a hard time blowing it up, and turning away offers. It might even be a significant car that has been lost for years. Any idea of who owned or drove it before?

Why dismiss the 235? Besides, it could be a 216. 235's weren't legal at Anadarko. Don't know what the rule was further south. We ran our 235 at Chickasha, but watched at Anadarko. Never made it as far south as Lawton. A truck 4 spd? The '36 3-spd was a top loader and the hot ticket due to their size.

Brian, have you bought up all the old coupes and sedans from the salvage north of Chickasha on Hwy 9? What's that guy's name? Ron? Back in the day, the story was he had another yard near Rush Springs. Not of course to be confused with Johnson's yard on 81 south of Chickasha.

It looks more like the 32. I would really like to have a supermodified from the mid 70's era than this one. If you here of anything like that for sale. I am more familier with v8 stuff. Thanks for the info Brian. Steve
