Brian, i saw an old racer at Waurika Ok, Thought about you when i saw it.. Havent been able to catch anybody at home and not sure if anybody lives there.. It just poped up one day... Its a 30 something model , its in bad shape but its got the drive train in it... Took my grandpa over to look at it and we set there for an hour as he told old storys.. He pointed out a tire getter right behind the left front wheel. If you ever come down this way Give me a call ,,, 580 313 1049 ,,, im not in the phone book..

Keep an eye on that car. Turns out THOSE cars have the most popularity nationwide when it comes to vintage race cars. Most were crushed, and very few if any are being cut up these days. You'd be amazed at the crowd you'd draw at a street rod show! You only have to do it once to see what I mean. People get tired of chrome, billet, and high dollar paint jobs that say "don't drive me, I'll get scratched". They keep looking for ideas and just to see what is current- but a' past the point of no return dirt track coupe' reaches down into that little kid inside that wants to have a blast!
Whats really cool is to park it next to a black, flamed '32 roadster. After all the moolah he has spent to build his dream car, he has to sit there and watch you draw a bigger crowd. The first time I saw that happen was in '97 or '98 at OkC. I knew then that these cars were coming back. Ironically, the MORE trailer queens on the lot, the more of a draw your old beat up, rusted coupe is. Maybe it's the genuine hot rod theme that is doing it, I don't know. It's kinda like the car says "get a helmet and a tetanus shot and we could do some laps!
Right now I am lucky enough to have my Dad's old coupe,'33 chevy. I am so busy with it and a supermod that I'm getting ready for this year. My shop is a carport and my worktable is sometimes the ground.
These are my babies and money is always tight.

Stan Cothren , One of the Southside Lawton Racers from back in the 70's , along with Dee Nix and Billy Beville, Wayne Nichols, Frank Headley , Richard Gillam and Hennessey Chassis there by where you lived and others that I can't remember anymore.
I have not seen Johnnie Stinnett in about 10 yrs. , He was running in a Legends race they use to have during the Winter Nat. show in Lawton in 1999 or around that year and got to talk to him then.

Haven't seen Johnny in years. Think I bought his last race car part, an old tail tank from the early '80s.

You have to admit that I was fast in the infield at Lawton. The biggest cheer I ever got driving a race car was when they tossed me out for scaring all those people. Yes I'll admit I overreacted, but at the time I really thought I was going to hit everything and the only way to get out of it was to stay on the gas!
The whole time I'm sure someone must've mentioned to JD that next time he needed to see how a guy drives before he hires him. I could have went on and become better, finally figured that out years later. Life just simply wasn't working that way for me at the time. 3 things I was afraid of the most in those days was 1. Getting hurt so bad that I couldn't take care of myself-2. Asking for more favors than I was asking for-3. This was the biggest-tearing up a race car I couldn't pay for. I would have still kept trying well enough over the years but the class was moving on and too, so did I.
Funny thing is, I ended up here preaching about old race cars and old times AFTER I thought no one cared about those days. This whole chapter for me started when I was hoping to get my car painted! By chance, I heard about a car show over at Wichita Falls basically called the Lloyd Ruby Overpass Dedication. The car was really just to get attention for another project I was working on,

Yes, it is goofy with all the crazy strips of stainless and chrome. It is the 5th prototype effort. Hope to get to no.7 someday and call it good enough!
In old school fashion, I got the geometry from an old fold out couch. Yes, still have it. 2 actuators and electric.
Stanley, if you'll remember 20 years ago I drove an old blue '71 shortbed all the time. This is that truck getting ready for a 2nd rebuild one of these years. It's now a Blazer, and everything underneath has around 30k miles on it since the last frame-off redo. That top took 9 1/2 years! Got it out there BEFORE the SSR by 3 months. Then I found out the market I wanted to sell to was BROKE, just like this Blazer idiot.

When the sun is out and I have reason, I take it whenever I can.
HEY CHEESE21, I think that's Earnest's old trailer, not sure. It is made exactly the way I wanted one, WWII floor and all.
