Brian Brown – Heading to "The Rock"!

(Bill W) October 22, 2008 – Brian Brown will be aiming at his first Short Track Nationals crown this weekend in Little Rock, Arkansas. The I-30 Speedway lays claim to one of the highest paying 360 events in the country, and certainly one of the most entertaining. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver carries some momentum after coming home with a solid fourth place finish in last weekend's Winter Nationals at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas.

The Devil's Bowl has not been kind to Brian in the past, and the heavy track conditions didn't play to his favor either. "They had a couple of inches of rain on Wednesday," he says. "That changed everything and it was heavy all weekend. The narrow tire cars (support class) on Saturday also made it rougher and heavier."

After storming from fifth to win his heat in front of Larry Neighbors, Brian drew for his starting spot for the feature, but came up with the eight. A good start from outside row four followed. "We were up to fourth on the first start, but the yellow came out," he says. "We were up to sixth on the second, but we were driven off the track by a car coming up the track, that was avoiding one on the bottom. We ended up pulling off after that."

The disappointing 20th (DNF) finish didn't deter Brian from Saturday's finale. On another heavy track, he drove from fifth to second in his heat race, trailing Trey Robb to the finish. He redrew the fourth starting spot for the 25-lap main event.

Describing the car as "average" Brian maintained, and ran fourth in the feature. "Christmas may have came a little early for us, because we really didn't have a fourth place car," he admits. "The car just wasn't operating. We were third until that last lap when Jack Dover got by us."

The race was a marathon that saw Jason Johnson lose a win on the final lap for the second week in a row. He ran out of fuel. "We were out there on the track for 41 minutes," says Brian. "We had about three gallons of fuel left, so we couldn't have gone much further either."

Brian was happy about the performance of the SuperClean #21 team. "The way we've ran at Devil's Bowl, to come out of there with a fourth was pretty good," he says. "It could have been a lot worse. It was a heavy track at a place that hasn't been one of my favorites, so it was good to come out of there with fourth."

He looks forward to Little Rock, where he will qualify on Friday night. "It's one of the best races for the fans that there is," he says. "As soon as they push you off, you have to start passing cars. A lot of it is luck of the draw, but you need a fast car too. It's not so much about the motor either."

Does he like his chances after winning the Cowtown Nationals on October 11? "We're aiming to win this deal, and we're going to do our best to do it," he confirms. "We want to bring the SuperClean #21 in there and put a good show on for the great fans down there. You look at the entry list and you can pick out dozens of guys who have a shot. Guys will tow in with huge Featherlites and some with open trailers. Some of those guys with the open trailers will be right there at the end. That's what makes it so fun."

Brian's Q&A

Gene Campbell asks: You seemed to take to Little Rock right away. What is it about the track that helped you adjust to it so quickly?

Brian answers: Usually, the track gets slicker as the night goes on. That really plays into my style of driving. We're going to practice tonight and see if we can't make ourselves a little better before rolling out there on Friday. Hopefully, Saturday night, it gets nice and slick.

Brown's Bits

Brian exploded on the Short Track Nationals scene in 2004. After finishing 12th in his prelim, he started 8th on Saturday night and came home fourth. In 2005, he ran 7th and 6th in his prelims, and after starting all over on Saturday, he seemed out of the race in a Last Chance qualifier. He won that qualifier, stormed from the back of his qualifier to fourth, barely qualifying for the finale. From there, he drove from 19th to 13th. 2006 was his best showing. After struggling to an eighth place B finish in his daytime prelim, he finished in the final transfer from the B main on the final night. From there he stormed all the way to a second place finish.
