Brian Brown – Lassoing Cowtown!
(Bill W) October 15, 2008 – The roll continued for Grain Valley, Missouri's Brian Brown as he pulled down his biggest feature win of the season last Saturday night at the First Annual Cowtown Nationals. The race was held on the tight Cowtown Speedway ¼ mile in Kennedale, Texas. This weekend, Brian will stay in the Lone Star State and race at the Winternationals at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite.
Brian came with some fresh power under the hood, and won his Friday heat from the pole. There was concern as the car was smoking most of the 8-lap distance. "We had a fresh motor there from Lee Nelson (Ostrich) that we borrowed from Don Long of Searsboro Telephone Company," says Brian. "Without people like Don, we wouldn't have been able to have the success we did last weekend. I'm not sure what the issue was, but we were shooting motor out the overflow in the heat. We ran the valves and leaked it down and it seemed fine. I think we had it too lean that first night."
Brian drew a four for the 30-lap prelim. The team thought about pulling the motor, but decided against it. "We changed the MSD box and the fuel pump before the A," he says. "We kind of went out there with a wing and a prayer that the motor would be o.k. We got into second on the start, and fell in behind Gavin (Punch)."
The track was heavy even after the racing concluded, and Brian couldn't find his way around the leader, settling second. "Knowing they locked the top four in for Saturday, we kind of settled in," says Brian. "There was a restart about halfway to go, and I tried a move up high and got up on two wheels. Gary Wright nosed in beside me, so I figured I'd settle for second and see if Gavin made a mistake. If not, we'd be locked in, and that's what happened. Gavin did a great job."
The motor issues weren't solved, but the SuperClean #21 team kept at it on Saturday. "It's kind of a guessing game with motors, especially when you get a fresh one," says Brian. "I think we were guessing wrong on Friday. I think we had it too lean. It ran better when we went richer."
The luck of the draw continued for Brian for Saturday's 35-lap $5,000 to win finale. "We were lucky enough to draw the pole for the feature," Brian says. "Jason (Johnson) got around us on the second lap, and I was just trying to move around on the track trying to find out where we could roll well, and playing with the wing. We were good but not great."
In traffic, Gary Wright challenged Brian briefly for second, while Johnson checked out. "We had a bit of a race there with Gary," Brian says. "Jason got Garry Lee Maier lapped, and after that, I think Garry was the fastest car on the track the majority of the race. He could have passed Jason a couple of times to un-lap himself. Once we got by Garry, we got some clean air and were able to reel Jason in. Even without the cautions, I think we would have been in good shape, we were really coming on."
After a late caution, Brian gave the fans some of the best racing they'll see anywhere. "The caution came with four to go," he explains. "We were able to run with him, and with two to go, he hooked a hole in turn one. That gave me a real good run on him, and I was able to pull even on the white flag. We were able to protect the bottom the last lap for the win."
The win was huge for the team and uncharacteristic of their Texas runs lately. "It seems like no matter what kind of roll we've been on going to Texas, the luck hasn't followed us there," says Brian. "To be able to come down here and win with a new team, it doesn't get any better. It's especially gratifying with the ASCS National guys here and all the good locals. If you would have told me a month ago we were going to accomplish what we have, I'd call you crazy!"
Brian is especially proud of the team's hard work. "It takes a lot of hard work from Chad, Cody and Glen Wignall down at Cowtown and people like SuperClean, Ditzfeld Transfer, Maxim and the rest of our partners. It's a fun time, and we want to keep it rolling this weekend at Devil's Bowl."

Dennis in Fort Worth, TX asks: What track that you have run did Cowtown remind you of most?
Brian answers: To be honest, it doesn't remind me of anything else really. It has some similar characteristics as Little Rock, but it's different. I had heard stories about how fast and heavy it was. Friday it was like that, but I have to take my hat off to Bo Rawdon and all the team there at Cowtown. They proved on Saturday that they can get that thing racy without laying rubber.

On this date in 2005, Brian bested the field at the Outlaw Motor Speedway south of Muskogee, Oklahoma, earning $3000 for the win. Trailing him to the line were Darren Stewart, Nick Smith, Jerrod Hull and Zach Chappell. In 61 feature events, Brian scored 12 wins (20%) in 2005. He also had 36 top fives (59%) and 49 top tens (80%). The wins came in five states (NE, IA, MO, SD, OK) and Tasmania.
