Brian Brown – Another Week, Another Win!
(Bill W) October 8, 2008 – Brian Brown kept the ball rolling last weekend with the Sprint Invaders series, winning one event and leading until flattening a tire in the other. His win aboard the SuperClean #21 came at the 34 Raceway near West Burlington, Iowa at a track he had never raced at. The 2007 track champion is headed South this weekend to the First Annual Cowtown Nationals in Kennedale, Texas.
Brian's victory at 34 Raceway came over a stout field of 39 sprint cars on Saturday. After drawing the outside row one starting spot, he went on to win his heat wire to wire. "We were able to start by Matt Rogerson, and he runs real well there at Burlington and has won a lot there," says Brian. "Being able to finish on top there helped our confidence knowing how we stacked up with him."
Brian started eighth in the Shake-up dash and finished seventh on a heavy track. "We drew the worst number (for the dash) both nights," he says. "We weren't running poorly in the dash, we just had some lanes blocked in front of us."
The 25-lap main event would see the Grain Valley, Missouri driver posting inside row four. "On the original start that didn't go, we made it up to second right away," he explains. "On the second start, we were able to battle by a couple of guys and get to third."
After a red flag period on lap five, Brian lined up third behind leader Jack Dover and Kaley Gharst. Disaster struck for Gharst when the race restarted as he shelled a driveline. "We lined up behind Jack on the restart, and had a slidejob fest for a couple of laps," says Brian. "Unfortunately, he got up over the berm in turn two and that gave us the lead. From then on, we were just running as hard as we could and praying for the win."
Win he did, taking home the $1500 check. Dover would impress by roaring back to a third place finish at the checkers. "I may have been to Burlington one time when I was young," says Brian. "What a facility that is, and Jeff and Amy Laue have done a great job with it. I look forward to going back in the years to come."
Friday night's event at the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois was going great for awhile. "I'd only raced at Jacksonville a couple of times in my life, and those times it was rough and heavy, nothing like it was on Friday," he says. "Billy West and his crew did a phenomenal job on the track. It wasn't one of my favorite tracks going in, but my outlook changed a lot after Friday."
Brian won his heat from row two, and surged from sixth to third in the dash. "We were able to get the lead on the first lap there in the heat and go on to win riding around the high side of the track," he says. "In the dash, we were moving forward, so we felt good about that too."
Brian started third in the main event, but had the lead by the first corner. He stretched out his lead as the laps wore on before disaster struck. "We were going as hard as we could there," he says. "We got into the fence there in turns three and four about lap six or so and bent up our wheel. We ran alright for four or five laps, but then the yellow came out for (Dustin) Selvage and the tire went flat."
The Sprint Invaders rule of "in the pits, out of the race" eliminated Brian. "It was frustrating in that we had that third win in a row there, and we couldn't pull it off," he says. "Knowing we had the fastest car there gave us the motivation to come back Saturday and do it."
This weekend will be a new experience at another new track, Cowtown Speedway. "I've heard you need to bring your spurs there…that it's a 'Cowboy Up' kind of track," he says. "That's usually not my style, but you have to be able to adapt if you want to race and make money. Chad and Cody are working real hard, we're having fun. Derek Beckman and Scott Ritchhart were able to help us last weekend too. Everyone's working hard and pulling the boat in the same direction, it's a fun time, and I'm as confident as I've ever been heading to Texas."

Bill G asks: I saw you were speaking at a church a couple weeks back. Can you tell us more about that event?
Brian answers: They have this event every year at Crown Pointe Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The pastor Barry Young always has a NASCAR night where they bring out local guys and Nationwide driver Eric McClure who always has a testimonial about how God has changed his life. It's a neat deal they put on and I think there were 500-600 people there. We don't get to church much during the race season, so it is a great event for us.
