Brian Brown – Two in a Row!

(Bill W) October 1, 2008 – Brian Brown made it two in a row, by taking the NCRA feature event last Saturday night at the 81 Speedway near Wichita, Kansas. The win was the third in his career with the Kansas based series, and his sixth win this season. This weekend, he'll try for two with the Sprint Invaders on Friday in Jacksonville, Illinois and Saturday in West Burlington, Iowa.

A day/night doubleheader was slated for 81 Speedway, so Brian wondered about track prep for the evening NCRA sprint car show. "When we arrived around 3 o'clock, they had just finished a Legends race," says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. "It was black-slick, but C. Ray Hall and his guys tilled it back up, and got water on it. It wasn't the most ideal conditions for the heat races, but we got through it."

With a draw that saw him start eighth in the second heat, Brian endured the wet and tacky conditions by charging to fourth. "There was still a lot of water on the track," he says. "We used 17 tear-offs in the heat. We were able to get by some cars anyway, so that got us in the show."

Avoiding the B in the 38 car field was big, and Brian started outside row six for the 25-lap main event. The track was rounding into shape after the heats and two B mains. "The track was able to slick off some," he says. "We ran through there pretty well with the Maxim chassis and Wesmar power."

Run well he did, as he surged towards the front. "We got going really good on the top in (turns) three and four, and the bottom in one and two," says Brian. "I kept maneuvering around as the race went on, trying to find the spot on the track where we were best."

Brian was riding third on lap 17, when leader Zach Chappell's power-plant went up in smoke. With Jack Dover inheriting the lead, Brian was poised for a winning move in second. He kept even with Dover in turns one and two, and they were side by side down the backstretch. "We were able to get around Dover on the high side of turns three and four there on the restart and go on to the win," says Brian.

So far, so good for the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21! "Chad and Cody and the SuperClean team did a great job again," he says. "We're on a roll right now, and with a lot of the big races coming up this month, we want to keep the ball rolling. We're having a great time!"

Brian also had three days of appearances representing the race team and SuperClean last weekend. On Wednesday, he was at the Centerpointe Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Thursday and Friday, he was appearing at The Legends at Village West Mall across from the Kansas Speedway. "It's really fun to go out, meet people, and introduce them to our product," he says. "It's fun to listen to some of the stories from the past too. I look forward to them anytime that we can."

Look for Brian to race with the Sprint Invaders this weekend. Friday, it will be the "Herb Barlow Memorial" at the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois, and on Saturday, he'll be at the series finale at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa.

Brian's Q&A

Ken Nash asks: Now that you've got a few weeks under your belt as an owner, what are some of the most challenging things you deal with?

Brian answers: Anytime you start your own business, or your own team, there are always big challenges and things you have to think about every day. So far, the biggest thing is just the day to day operations and having everything we need at the track to be 100% ready to go. You always have to be thinking ahead, so you're not behind the 8-ball when you get to the track, and you're a step ahead of the next car. I'm excited and I think we have a shot to pick off a couple of these big October races. We're going to finish on a good note, and carry it into next year.

Brown's Bits

One year ago, Brian bested a strong ASCS-Sooner field in that series' finale at Mid-America Motor Speedway in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. The win came over brothers Sean McClelland and Brian McClelland, Kevin Ramey and Zach Chappell. Brian started third and chased Gary Taylor and Brian McClelland most of the way. He eventually took a lap 19 lead in traffic and went on to win $3,000.
