Brian Brown – Super at Spencer!
(Bill W) September 17, 2008 – It was a great debut for new car owner, Brian Brown at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa last Wednesday. After putting a new team together, he was able to finish in the top five with the best in the business, the World of Outlaws. Four races were planned with the WoO, but two washed out.
Brian's time trial lap was of the utmost importance at Spencer. "Qualifying 12th was obviously the key to the whole night," says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. "That put us on the front row of the heat. We were able to take advantage of that."
He led wire to wire in the 8-lap heat putting him in the dash, but it wasn't without travail. "We broke the left rear brake mount off in the heat and had to be towed back to the pit," says Brian. "We ran the last couple laps without that. Being in the third heat, that didn't give us a chance to get it fixed before the dash. We barely got the line plugged in time."
Drawing a starting spot outside row one, Brian held the spot despite constant pressure from two-time and defending WoO champion Donny Schatz. "To race with Donny and end up in front of him in any race, you're doing something good," says Brian. "It was almost surreal with all we had been through for the last couple of weeks."
With weather in the area, things were moved along too quickly to make serious repairs to the brakes before Brian's front row start in the main event. "We weren't able to fix the brake in time for the feature either, so we went out there with two brakes," he says. "Some guys race with two brakes, but I've grown up racing with three, so we were at a disadvantage a bit there because the car acts differently."
The short turnaround didn't allow for a look at the racing surface either, but after Brian's strong fifth place run, few could tell. "We didn't get a chance to take a look at the track, because we were working, and we fell back behind (Craig) Dollansky and Joey (Saldana)," says Brian of falling to third at the outset. "We ran there for awhile and then I went low one lap there and Schatz and (Jason) Meyers were able to drive by me through the center. That's kind of where we stayed the rest of the way."
All in all, it was a great night for the Brian Brown Racing team. "Being able to throw things together and be competitive with the Outlaws was awesome," says the driver. "Just to be competitive is a chore. To run fifth is a big confidence booster for the team and me. To go to a track for the first time with a new team against the Outlaws and get fifth…you can't ask for much more. I didn't dream we'd do that well with the situation the way it was."
The next racing opportunity came Sunday night at the Lucas Oil Speedway near Wheatland, Missouri. Brian has had success there with a 360, but this was the first visit to the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" for the WoO. Brian qualified a disappointing 19th. "It was blowing dust qualifying and I went out later, but that's not much of an excuse, because some guys laid some good laps after we went out," he says. "Not running the 410 on a lot of these tracks, you don't know how much to loosen or tighten the car up and the Outlaws have it dialed in every time."
After coming from outside the heat invert to qualify for the feature, Brian started 19th in the grid. He talked about his run that resulted in a DNF. "We were able to get up to 14th at one point, but we were lapped early. There really was no sense in staying out there and possibly ruining someone else's race, it doesn't pay any different, and there's no sense of tearing things up this late in the season, so we decided to call it a night and pulled it off."
Brian and the SuperClean #21 team will head to 24 Raceway Park east of Moberly, Missouri, where he is undefeated in competition (five for five), to take on the Winged Outlaw Warriors this Saturday.

Josh in Chillicothe, MO asks: What is it about Moberly that suits your driving style?
Brian answers: It's kind of a wide open type deal like a miniature Eldora. I think what fits my style so well, is that a lot of guys don't like to get up there ¾ or all the way up the track to the fence. A lot stay in the middle to the bottom. Sometimes I'm in my own lane up there by myself. It's one of the top two or three racetracks that we race at. I'm really looking forward to going there.

Brown's Bits
Amazingly, Brian has won all five times he has raced a sprint car at 24 Raceway Park. He has won September shows there the last four years (2004-07), and took the Gary Scott Memorial in May of 2007, besting Randy Martin, Josh Fisher, Jesse Hockett and Tim Newman. All five wins have come in Winged Outlaw Warriors competition.
