I copied this fron Williams Grove Message Board
John took a bad flip out over in turn 1/2 at grove. He did lose consciousness for awhile and had major tingling in hands and feet. he was transported to Hershey Med center and is to have broken his neck. Thoughts are with ya buddy! What a true racer this man is...his first words to the Techs were...Is Geesey OK?
Also hope Pat and Kyle Pruitt are ok as well from there front stretch incident!

Again from W.G.M.B.
Hello,
My name is Bill Bourne, and I'm not a racing fan so I'm new to this forum. Please forgive me if this gets posted twice. I thought I sent it once before, but it hasn't shown up yet.
Anyway, I want to thank you all for your prayers and well-wishes for John. John's mother is my sister-in-law by marriage. Those of you who know her, know she's one of the sweetest people you're likely to meet, and that this is a nightmare come true for her, as it would be for any "racing mom".
Like some of you, we're just sitting around waiting for news on John's condition. As I understand it, he's still in surgery as I type this. Should I learn anything new I will share the info with you if I can.
Once again, thank you all for your kindness.
Bill

Hi all.
Bill Bourne here again with an update for you. Just got off the phone with my bro-in-law (Camille's husband, Joe)
John is currently undergoing a second precedure to repair what can best be described as a "shattered" C-4 vertebre. The first procedure to remove bone fragments went well. They are now taking bone grafts from his femur in an attempt to repair the damage to the vertebre. He's been in surgery since 4:00AM this morning with a small time-out inbetween procedures to make sure he remains "stable". There is a possibility the injury he sustained will have life-long consequences as far as his legs are concerned. But I want to STRESS... Nobody knows anything FOR SURE right now. The hope is that the lack of feeling in his legs, and the tingling in his arms was being caused by the bone fragments and the general trauma to the spinal cord that occured in the affected area. The fragments have been removed, and once the swelling goes down, the Dr's will know better what to expect. But right now it's all still up in the air, and probably will be for at least the next week or so.
I will continue to keep you informed if and when I know something. But don't be alarmed if the news does not come fast.
Once again, thank you all for your concern, and keep those thoughts and prayers coming.
Bill

Hi Again.
Probably the last update for today.
John is out of surgery, "stable" and in recovery.
Breathing tube will remain in place for the next day or two, but he is in no immediate mortal danger.
The Dr's cannot say at this time (due to swelling in the area of the injury putting pressure on the spinal cord) whether or not there will be any permanent paralysis.
Basically it's just touch and go on a day-to-day basis.
I'll continue to keep you all posted if anything significant develops.
Again, I cannot thank you all enough for the outpouring of prayers and concern you've expressed. I know Joe and Cammile appreciate it along with John's sister, Teresa. And even though I only met him once, I'm sure Jim does too.
Bill

John was having a banner rookie season in the 410s with two wins at Port Royal and one at Williams Grove. He is a gasser, he was going to be one of the good ones. We all pray he escapes permanent injury. Thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully, the news is not as bad as it sounds. Like Cubic said, John was really having a great 410 rookie season and looked to be one of central PA's rising stars. He is just 23 years old. It really has been a tough 12 months to be a central PA Sprint Car fan -- Billy Kimmel's death at the Grove last year, Jeff Shepard getting hurt at Knoxville and now this.
I really have not looked that closely at what rookies elsewhere in the country are doing, but Westbrook should have a good chance at being national 410 Rookie of the Year, with three 410 wins in PA this season. There is currently a big thread of the Grove board entitled "Prayers for Westbrook" for anyone that is interested.

Westbrook recovering from crashWednesday, September 10, 2008 BY TODD HEINTZELMAN For The Patriot-News John Westbrook, 23, of Dillsburg was seriously injured in a crash during the 358-sprint car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
His car flipped over the first turn guardrail during the fourth lap of the feature and landed upright near the access road.
Westbrook's mother confirmed Tuesday afternoon he has a broken vertebrae in his neck, but the rest of his back and spine are OK.
Westbrook remains in critical condition at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and he went through nine hours of surgery to repair the vertebrae Saturday morning, his mother said.
Westbrook scored his first career wins in the 410-sprint division at Williams Grove and Port Royal Speedways this season.
He scored a second win at Port Royal, along with a win in the 358-sprints at the Grove and is the leading heat winner.
Cards may be sent to: John Westbrook 15 W. Greenhouse Road Dillsburg, Pa. 17019
A recovery fund has been set up at: Members 1st Federal Credit Union 5000 Louise Drive P.O. Box 40 Mechanicsburg, Pa. 17055
Those wishing to contribute should specify their donation to the John Westbrook Recovery Fund.
Updates on his condition are being posted on www.johnwestbrookracing.com.

Taken from John's website...
9-22-08
Hey Guys! Sorry it has been a couple days since I've given you all an update, but sometimes no news is good news! John is continuing to get better with each day, his breathing continues to get better as his muscles get stronger, the doctors seem optimistic that he will one day completely breath on his own, but of course no one knows for sure of any certain outcome. His movement has stayed the same, but he continues everyday to focus on it, and try his best for recovery. We all need to continue to stay strong and provide optimisim for John as he starts his long and hard road ahead of him, yes it will be tough, but he needs to remember to that we all are, and will continue to be, right there with him through it all. John and the family have made the decision that John will go to Magee Rehabilitation Hospital for his physical therapy. The doctors, along with Magee representatives, all strongly feel that he will be going soon!
Some of you may be aware of Magee because of Penn State football player Adam Teliferro. He went to Magee in October of 2000, after suffering from a neck injury very similiar to John's. In January of 2001, with the assistance of two canes, Adam walked out the front doors of Magee and then a few months later, jogged onto the field, leading all his team members, with a proud Joe Paterno watching. We have to keep hope because this is all we can do right now. There are only 14 rehabilitation centers in the United States that deal with Spinal Cord injuries, Magee, located in Philadelphia, is rated number 3, which makes it a "model" rehab, that provides all the latest technologies and stimulators. We are all very optimistic about what Magee can do for John! To check it out, go to www.mageerehab.org Thanks!

(taken from Jerry Reigle notes in Nov. 4th Area Auto Racing News)
John Westbrook is in Philidelphia's Magee Rehabilitation Center and he's watching racing tapes.
According to his father Jim Westbrook, his son watched half of Lynn Schaeffer's Thunder on the Mountain tape this weekend.
Also, John has watched the crash at Williams Grove Speedway that led to his hospitalization.
"I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch it, but he wanted to look and see what went wrong," Jim said.
Jim Westbrook said there is a chance Westbrook could be linked via video conference to this Friday night's Williams Grove Speedway banquet.
"He can't understand why people would want to see him," he said.
Westbrook continues to make progress. Last Saturday, he started to breath on his own.
"The big problem now is one bed sore, which is common for spinal injury victims," he said.
"They like to get him up (in a wheelchair) for four hours, but you have to be careful with the sores."
Cards can reach him at 15 W. Greenhouse Rd, Dillsburg, PA 17019.
