Come on now GRP,,,,,, You know that the watering job is for those old, retired, ex-late model driving guys like Chuck,,,, I'm much more of the grader type,,, have to stick with those "open" wheels anyway that I can!! LOL

Congrats on the nice run by Steiny,,,, I wonder if his fading in the late going was do to his getting up there in age and maybe falling out of the seat a little....... LOL

Brian

I know Brian, that is why I told Stan M to black flag you IF you attempted to get in the water truck. Chuck P is the only one truly qualified to handle that duty during contest action. Fans and competitors alike shutter at the thought of somebody getting the big water rig buried in the mud. Of course I don't know who does those kinds of things, but it is better to not tempt fate and leave the watering chores to the expert. Smile

The two-to-go signal was given by Stan M on Friday January 26 indicating there were just a couple of days left in the 8th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest. Three late model and two sprint car entries arrived at MDTR on Friday to try their luck on the high-banks in pursuit of a good contest score. Fans would see the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year battle in the late model division change hands while in the sprint car ranks an 8-time contest participant made a bid for the lead. Here's the scoop from Friday.

After suffering "motor" problems two years ago and then seeing his entry "engine" grenade last year, Mark Sinn returned with an improved powerplant in his Warren Warrior Chassis. No longer does Mark have to make the super long haul from New York, as he is back home near the Red River Valley area. Attempting to at least double his score, Mark found the fresh power and closer surroundings to his liking. Stan M checkered Mark's Warrior with a 17 point tally. Indeed, the Sinnfully Fast Race Team had made a 12 point improvement over last year's DNF.

The next contestant in the late model division was making his first trip to the MDTR Speedway for contest competition. Mark Johnson unloaded a MasterSbilt by Mars for contest action and it soon became apparent that his effort was going to shake up the VFC Rookie of the Year standings. Mark blasted his Baxter Engines machine around the high side as he raced past numerous contestants. Soon Jason Richert was behind him and Mark set his sights on the lead pack. With Stan M displaying the white flag for Mark, he nailed a solid final lap and moved past Ray Beste into sixth place in the current standings. Mark climbed from his mount afterwards and exclaimed, "It was a lot of fun. I hope I did okay." No doubt about that Mark, as you are the current VFC Rookie of the Year leader.

A return visit in week #2 from the Bonduel Bullet, Brad Luepke, saw him bring his potent Pabst Powered/Mitchell Performance Products #57 late model back to MDTR. Brad was making his third contest try in the late model ranks in the past four years, having sat out with motor trouble two years ago. This year the Pabst Powerplant started strong but soon began showing signs of smoke near the midway mark of his run. Smoking rather heavily down the stretch, Brad was able to pull under Stan's checkers with a strong 35 point effort and complete his contest attempt. Mark gave credit to his crew, "a couple of Eastern Guys" for their help in getting his #57 entry on track. As was the case last week, Brad quickly returned to the camping area to see what Vinster and Rita were up to and to once again get a few bowling pointers from those Superior fans. He may have cracked open a Pabst or two.

In the sprint car division on day #6, Ben Crees returned to the MDTR Speedway for his second contest try after debuting with a solid score last year in his rookie run. Ben had his Jackson Limited Sprint #23c powered by the unlimited Firefighter 550 motor running strong. Ben soon powered past A J Lusk, caught Jason Johnson coming off turn #2, and began his bid to overtake Nick Lusk. Nick proved to be a strong competitor, as Ben worked several lines around MDTR but to no avail. Ben would settle in with a 35 point score between Nick and Jason in the current standings. A strong contingent from the Jackson area are really packed up in the 33-36 point range. Great jobs guys and thanks for participating in the contest. I believe last year's sprint car Rookie of the Year is also pitside, so another strong Jackson area competitor will likely arrive trackside on Saturday for his attempt to unseat the leader.

Speaking of the leader, Kevin Mudrak would come under serious attack from our final Friday night entrant. Three-time contest champion Todd Boots had returned home from Austrailia just this week and was busy working on his entry. Todd is the ONLY contestant to have participated in ALL eight trivia contests. He has two out-right wins, one co-champion title, two second place finishes and a couple of other top ten performances. This Tea, South Dakota hot-shoe is certainly a threat to win. Todd had his Citywide Insulation R19 sprinter humming with a newly refreshened Capetta motor. He was a bit concerned about getting caught in the loose stuff, as Todd was behind the 8-ball (in his words) hustling to get his entry setup properly in order to beat the contest deadline. No worries about that, as he arrived a good 24+ hours ahead of that time. Could late model guy Kevin Mudrak hold off one of the most powerful sprint car competitors in contest history? The fans were focused on this battle. Todd tried every trick in the book, even quizzing Doug Wolfgang on one of the questions in search of an answer, but in the end his potent R19 sprint entry raced under Stan's checkered flag with an identical 43 point score. By virtue of earliest entry tie-breaker, Kevin had withstood a tremendous challenge by a very strong competitor. The late model fans roared their approval while the sprint car fans shrugged their shoulders and shook their heads in disbelief. How could this be, a late model guy still leading the sprint car division after day #6? But it's not over until midnight on Saturday and there are still some very serious challengers out there in sprint car land yet to be heard from.

Sorry about being a bit late with the day #6 recap, but the 5th Annual 20/20 Pro Kart event was a late night including a rundown posted on 20/20 in the wee hours this morning. Then GRP went ice fishing on Saturday morning. Stan M shook his head when he found out the contest promoter was not going to be there to help Stan and Les with track grooming for the final day. Stan remarked, "This is going to cost him an extra case of beer!" GRP did not forget about Stan though, as he made sure to get what is already becoming a popular 20/20 Racing t-shirt for him at the event last night. Smile

Time to start scoring Saturday entries soon. We've got a couple of strong runners in the sprints to score, so there could be a lead change forthcoming. The sprint car fans are hopeful of that while the late model fans are still reveling in the fact that one of their own is leading the sprint car division after day #6.

That would be "shudder" GRP. A "shutter" is what's on MDTR track photographer Vinster's camera wink

Stan M held the double checkered flags high in his hands to throw the curtain down on the 8th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest at midnight on Saturday January 27. A tremendous two weeks of competition at the mythical MDTR Speedway in first the modified and super stock divisions and then in the late model and sprint car divisions has provided fans and competitors alike with plenty of fun. There have been lots of interesting things that have happened in the contest during the past couple of weeks, and the final day of competition certainly provided some more of the same. We've got plenty to cover, so buckle up, sit back and enjoy the show.

The most active class today was by far the sprint car division, so we will cover those happenings after we wrap up the action in the late model division. There were five entries on the final day for the late models. The first entry to pull through the back gate needs no introduction at the MDTR Speedway. He is the only contestant to post a perfect score in any division. He is also coming off two straight championships and two runnerup finishes the previous two years before. Everyone knew when CLSracer Chris Stepan brought his FYE Motorsports/Patio Door Enterprises/50 Point Club late model trackside for his contest run today that he would make a serious bid for the lead. Chris worked extremely hard to find the right setup, as he made numerous phone calls to veteran drivers in search of the correct information. Finally running out of time, Chris made an all-out assault on first place. Passing entry after entry, the CLSracer was close to perfect in the first half of his run. One slight bobble on lap 14 and again on lap 20 spelled doom for his chance of taking the #1 spot. Despite a perfect second half, Chris would end up with a total of 48 points. By virtue of earliest entry tie-breaker, Kevin Mudrak had retained the lead during some extremely tough contest competiton.

Not long after Chris had made his attempt at the #1 spot, another very strong runner from Brandon, SD brought his late model to the MDTR Speedway along with his sprint entry in the big stacker trailer. The RHS Enterprises late model was working well today on the MDTR high-banks. Ron Haugstad was looking to gain a top five finish in that division for the first time in the contest. A solid run produced a 41 point score, placing him in the #5 spot in the standings. They RHS team did not have much time for congrats, since they needed to fine-tune their sprint car entry in hopes of knocking that late model guy out of the first place position.

The last three late model entries today arrived very late at MDTR, all three within the final hour. Randy Sahlstrom towed his Pease Eggs/RJ at the Speedway #13 late model down from Milaca for his first try in this division. Randy has entered all of the other divisions in the contest at various times, so it was only natural that he would give the "big dawgs" a whirl. Randy was concerned about not having a good showing, but when Stan M waved the checkers on his run Randy had turned in a very good 31 point performance. In fact, it proved to be his best contest score in any division so far. Congrats Randy!

Usually one of the last contestants to turn laps at the MDTR Speedway each year, Jim Langel brought his unsponsored #XXX L-N-L Motorsports, Bloomquist Chassis/Draime Motor late model down from his hometown of Luck, WI. Okay, so Jim lives in the same town as Racehead (Milltown), we still call the town with the cool name his hometown. Jim's XXX late model was not up to speed today...kind of like having an anchor tied to your late model. Jim just could not get the new Bloomer Chassis to handle right, so it's back to the drawing board for next year. The L-N-L entry did ride home with an 18 point score. Jim was more concerned about his sprint car though, as he reported that someone had sabotaged the motor when the crew wasn't looking. Seems like a screw was found missing from the fuel injector stacks. It was later found when the heads on the sprint car were removed. There it was, laying on top of one of the pistons. Close call for the L-N-L team with time running out.

Our final late model entry and final contest entry hails from Harwood, ND. Josh Johnson had only been a spectator at MDTR in previous years, but this was the year he decided to bring his Double J #84 GRT down for a try in the contest. Josh had just had a good night on Friday at the 5th Annual Pro Kart event, so he was anxious to see how he could do in the contest. The Double J car with Racefan118 behind the wheel sprang to life in the waning moments of the contest. Stan M was anxiously waiting to throw the final checkers as Josh sped around MDTR. In the end, Josh came up just four points shy of overtaking another Johnson, Mark that is, for the coveted Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year Award. Josh would be the final contestant in the 2007 edition of the contest.

Congrats to Kevin Mudrak on winning his first GRP Racing Trivia Contest Late Model Division Championship. Two seconds and a third in the past three years are now just a memory for the LateModel1 team, as they celebrate their victory in the 8th Annual edition of the contest.

Please note that due to the large number of entries on the final day, I will break the sprint car report out into a separate post. There is a ton of stuff to cover for the sprints anyways.

Final Late Model Division Point Standings (January 27):

1. Kevin Mudrak, Superior WI = 48

2. Chris Stepan, St. Cloud MN = 48

3. Rob Fogle, Brookings SD = 45

4. Mark Schreiner, Hutchinson MN = 44

5. Ron Haugstad, Brandon SD = 41

6. Colin Paetznick, Plymouth MN = 40

7. Tony Steuck, Watertown SD = 39-

8. Mark Johnson, Baxter MN = 37 ROY

9. Ray Beste, Sauk Centre MN = 36

10. Brad Luepke, Bonduel WI = 35

11. Josh Johnson, Harwood ND = 34 ROY

12. Marshall Fegers, Mound MN = 33

13. John Lackmann, Long Prairie MN = 32

14. Randy Sahlstrom, Milaca MN = 31 ROY

15. Jason Richert, Cadott WI = 25 ROY

16. Al Schmidt, Watertown SD = 24 ROY

17. Nate Sevals, Rice Lake WI = 23

17. Roger Koth, Pierre SD = 21

19. Aaron Lund, Brandon MN = 18 ROY

20. Jim Langel, Luck WI = 18

21. Mark Sinn, Warren MN = 17

22. Terry Slinger, Missouri = 11

-Note: A double-check of the entries revealed that GRP inadvertently circled a point for Q#18 on Tony Steuck's entry. This has now been remedied to reflect his correct score.

*ROY denotes Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year contender.

Running out of energy tonight, so the sprint car report will be done later on today. For those who want to know, Ron Haugstad put up a 49 point score to win the sprint car division. LateModel1 fan Kevin Mudrak finished 4th. More later from the 11 sprint car entries received on the final day. Alex Johnson won the VFC Rookie of the Year in the sprints.

Sprint car action at the MDTR Speedway on the final day of the contest was fast and furious. Eleven entries signed in through the back gate. Along with the five late model entries, that is the most entries received in one day in contest history. Indeed, the crew was extremely busy at MDTR for the last lap of the contest. The lead changed hands on the final day, and the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year battle also saw a change at the top. Even a technical scoring difficulty surfaced that caused contest promoter GRP to revise several scores when he discovered that the photo of the #23S sprinter had been misidentified by the person who sent him the photo. GRP checked further and discovered that the name listed on the car, Jeff Becker, was indeed the driver in the car in the photo. Fortunately the revision in the point standings made NO difference in the running order, since many of the teams had correctly identified that photo anyways. As in real world racing activity, you just never know for sure what kinds of little problems might develop during the course of a racing program. Time to review the hectic final day action in the sprints at MDTR.

Completing his fourth division of competition at MDTR this year, rookie contestant Al Schmidt unloaded his Smitty's #12 Motorsports & Graphics sprint car entry from his stacker trailer. Al certainly had turned plenty of laps at MDTR this season, but like any first attempt he was searching to find the right line. The wild winged wonders can be a handful at MDTR, as Al soon discovered. A strong start got him going in the right direction, but a close call near the turn 4 wall approaching the halfway mark of his run brought the crowd to their feet. Al gathered it back up and went on to finish with a 24 point score. Contest promoter GRP thanked Smitty for competing in all four divisions, as he joined Modchaser and LateModel1 for the Wildcard Four Score Award drawing. GRP sometimes does not announce ahead of time an award for those who elect to compete in all four classes, waiting to see who will voluntarily send in entries in all divisions.

The next sprint car entry to arrive trackside came from last year's VFC Rookie of the Year. The 2006 Jackson Speedway Limited Sprint point champion, Bruce Anderson, had returned to MDTR with his #11a sprinter in an attempt to earn the top prize. Bruce was extremely strong during the first half of his run. The second half proved to be a little trickier to navigate, as a slight rut developed in turn 2. For the second straight season, the Trimont Tornado buzzed under Stan's checkered flag with a very strong effort that earned him 42 points. At the moment, Bruce would run in third place behind Kevin Mudrak and Todd Boots. Those positions would soon come under heavy attack.

Making his fourth straight appearance in the sprint car division at MDTR, Shane Trondson brought his Trondson Engines #31 Pumpkin Eater sprinter on to the high banks. Shane had led early on last year enroute to a 6th place finish, and he was looking to improve that run for a top five this year. Shane looks forward to the contest every year, as he has been involved in the sport of sprint car racing his entire life. Drawing upon his past knowledge of the tricky MDTR surface, Shane powered his way forward in the standings and found himself sitting in the #5 spot when he roared beneath the checkered flag. He knew there were still several strong competitors in the pit area, so his top five bid would be under assault.

Continuing her string of what is now five consecutive appearances in contest action, one of our Fastest Female competitors arrived at MDTR on the final day. Stephanie Isaacson (StephDracefan) brought her pink #81 Winged Women on Wheels sprinter out for some fast laps. Steph has enjoyed participating in the contest in her favorite class. This year she did not have as much time to spend working on getting the #81 WWOW entry dialed in. A crowd favorite, Steph is always outgoing and willing to visit with her many MDTR fans. This year the "Queen of Jackson" rode home with a 27 point effort. Steph knew it would not be a contending score for a top ten finish, but she just enjoyed being at MDTR and wanted to keep her string of appearances intact.

When the RHS Enterprises sprinter appears at MDTR, fellow competitors and fans know that Ron Haugstad is a serious contender for the championship title. Since his first contest attempt in the 3rd Annual affair, Ron has earned four championships and one runnerup position in the standings. All eyes were focused on his bid for yet another title this year. Ron would not disappoint his fans! In a nearly flawless run, Ron marched forward to the top of the standings with a 49 point performance. A slight miscue on lap 13 was his only blemish on an otherwise perfect run. The record MDTR crowd rose to their feet and applauded his effort as he glided under Stan's checkered flag. There was a new leader in the standings, but few veteran contest followers were surprised They knew this South Dakota hot-shoe would be a serious threat for the win. The South Dakota fans rejoiced. At last, that late model guy from Superior had been passed.

Following Ron's run, another South Dakota challenger made his debut at the MDTR Speedway in contest action. Alex Johnson brough his BAM Racing LLC Schnee powered #69x sprinter on to the track for his rookie attempt. Impressive would be an understatement for this first-time MDTR runner. Alex masterfully handled his well-prepared entry and soon found himself blasting past current ROY contender Tyler Urban. Alex continued his march forward and left four more competitors in his dust as he bolted to a 46 point score! Alex could actually see the leader Ron Haugstad, but Ron's effort was just too strong for him to overcome. A fine performance by Alex would earn him the Victory Funding Connection Rookie of the Year Award. Alex thanked his crew chief, Doug Brees, from Knoxville, IA. He was also sitting in the second spot in the current running order, but that would change very soon. The South Dakota fans continued their celebration, as SD ran 1-2 at the moment.

Once again making the tow up I-94 from Wisconsin, IRA fan Michael Pietrowski was looking to improve upon his strong fifth place finish in last year's standings. Known as "The Edge" by MDTR fans, Michael unloaded his #98A sprint entry for his third contest attempt. It soon became apparent that Michael was going to mount a serious bid for a top running position, as he was nearly flawless in the first half of his run. With a couple of minor slips on the tricky MDTR track, the powerful #98A sprint entry roared past all but one competitor. Yes fans, Michael had moved into second place past Alex Johnson by one point. The #98A entry completed his trip around the track with a thrilling 47 point score. The Wisconsin fans were back on their feet cheering loudly, as one of their own had moved in the #2 spot between the top two SD runners.

Long-time contest participate Doug "Tippedover" Suby made the trek north from Iowa for his fourth run in the sprint car division. The underfunded Tippedover Motorsports Team brought their old Kinser Racing Maxim with a borrowed Boyer powerplant from the Hejna brothers. Tippedover knows his way around the MDTR track, as he is usually in the top ten when the sun sets. The old Maxim may have seen its better days, but Doug was able to work his veteran sprint car magic once again and record a 37 point score. It is always a fun time when Doug and the Mason City Gang get together at the races for some bench racing and good natured kidding. Doug's run this year would end up in the tenth place spot, so the old Maxim still had a top 10 in her at that. Doug thanked his crew chief Kristie for the moral support.

A rookie in the sprint car division was scratching the MDTR dirt for the first time. Chris "Dynamite" Deno made the trek north from historic Mantorville, MN. Hailing from modified country, Chris unloaded an immaculate looking sprinter that reflected a Fourth of July theme. Hence, the MDTR fans quickly nicknamed him "Dynamite." Chris knew that the tricky MDTR track would test his skills and abilities in the sprint class, but he had a blast trying to figure out the right setup and wheel his #4 sprinter around the high-banked speedway. As his race wore on, his setup faded a bit. Chris rocketed under the checkered with a 23 point tally. Many fans commended Chris afterwards for the fine "fireworks" graphics display on his sprinter.

In the waning hours of the contest, one kind of expects an entry to arrive from Mike "Pencil" Priefer. The nephew of our famous water truck driver, Chuck Priefer, Mike is a tremendous sprint car fan. Mike's #55L sprinter this year sported a new graphics design and theme. No fans, it was not a water truck paint scheme. Mike had elected a retro scheme going back to the days of North Starr Speedway. Very cool. In his seventh contest, Mike certainly knows the MDTR track very well. He would turn in his best effort yet with a fine 35 point performance, no thanks by the way to Chuck as the only photo in the contest that Mike asked for a little advice on was the #21S pic. GRP stumped a lot of contestants with that photo, and Chuck P fell victim to the trick as well. The key on that photo was the car number, 21S not 21X. Mike vowed that he will let Chuck stick to water truck driving after this. Smile

Our final sprint car entry arrived about 15 minutes before the contest deadline. The man from Luck, Jim Langel, has been known to wait until the last minute to make a run at MDTR during contest activity. This year was no different. In his unsponsored #XXX L-N-L Motorsports entry that sported a Maxim Chassis with Kriner power, Jim's efforts in the contest can be traced back to the 2nd Annual deal held in 2001. Yes fans, Jim is a veteran MDTR runner and long-time sprint car fan. It is always a pleasure to welcome Jim to the contest. This year, Jim equalled his contest-best score by recording a 37 point effort. Jim would be the last contestant to make laps in the sprint car division this year. He was however not the last contender on the track, as that honor went to Josh Johnson as previously described.

At long last, Stan M waved the double checkered flags to bring to a conclusion the 8th Annual GRP Racing Trivia Contest. Contest promoter GRP wants to take this chance to thank all of the contestants and all of the race fans who have followed along on the messages boards. Thanks to our contest flagman Stan M and his son Les M for filling in a couple of times. Thanks also to Mike Orness for flagging one day and to Terry Lehnertz for guest announcing a couple of times. Without Stan's help in hosting the contest on his Minnesota Dirt Track Racing website, we would not be able to enjoy two weeks of trivia contest competition and two weeks of fun and games. It's been another great time the past two weeks. I will run through the standings in all divisions and contact prize money winners for their mailing addresses or verify ones I have on hand from previous years. A HUGE fireworks display wrapped up the festivities at the MDTR Speedway at midnight Saturday January 27, 2007.

Prize money will be mailed out either Thursday Feb 1 or Friday Feb 2.

Thanks again to all participants and all those who followed along on the message boards. It sure was another fun time spent at the mythical MDTR Speedway during trivia contest action. I'm going to have to find another tough question in the sprints for next year. If I don't, somebody like Ron H is going to end up acing the sucker with a perfect 50 point score. Let's see...who won the 1959...oh well not until next year. Smile

All you have to do is go back to the 1960's era. That usually stumps most of them.

Heck, most nights I can't remember anymore than who won & where we finished. And that's BEFORE I get back to the cooler!

Alzheimer's means never having to say you're sorry - because you can't remember what you did anyway!

Senility sucks, but I don't remember why!

That's why we've got stats guys like GRP. So the rest of us can pay more attention to the cooler than the racing wink
