A few years back a speedway had a contest between a winged sprintcar and a NASCAR car. For the sprint car the track was overlayed with dirt. I do know the sprintcar timed in quicker than the NASCAR did.
Is this an urban myth, or did it really happen? Does anyone know where I can get info on this? Or if you know the top-line details just post it here, i.e which speedway, who were the drivers and what was the outcome?

I think that you're confusing the fact that the WoO ran at Bristol, a NASCAR track, which was covered with dirt for the sprinters. Sammy Swindell, I believe, holds the track record there, which is quite a bit under NASCAR's time for the track.....
Found this in an article on the web from 2006...
According to Knoxville Raceway's web site, NASCAR driver Ryan Newman holds the track record at Bristol Motor Speedway of 14.908 seconds while sprint car driver Sammy Swindell recorded a 13.860 lap on dirt six years earlier at the same track.

Thanks, that is it. My recollection of the article obviously has become a bit distorted over time! I am doing bit researh for a sponsorhip proposal and those facts are just what I was after.

Sammy's best lap was 13.986 @ 137.194 mph with the track covered in dirt. Though the Bristol pavement is banked 36 degrees, they removed some of the banking to slow the cars. I remember in the opening of the broadcast, Brad Doty mentioning that the highway patrol had a radar gun in turn 1 and clocked Sammy @ 171 mph entering the turn!
In 2003, the AVSS (winged pavement sprints) tested at Bristol and Tom Fedewa turned a 13.830 @ 138.742 mph. On the 36 degree banked oval on pavement.
One other note, Sammy paced the NASCAR field in a Stealth sprint car with pavement tires on it.

Correct me if I'm in error, but I thought they didn't lessen the banking until the 2nd and last year at Bristol.

i was there for the first race in turn 1 - eagles seat - and the banking was modified from day one because the clay would not adhere to the track without the more moderate angle.

Saw a post somewhere that was supposedly from the promoter/owner or whatever saying they were NOT going back to dirt. The saga continues.
I am lucky enough to work at one of the best tracks
anywhere.
