Ocean Speedway Wright One 360 Sprint Car Series
Round Five Friday night June 06, 2008
Round five of the Wright One 360 Sprint car series saw yet another night of fierce racing action. With 24 winged 360's signed in the competition was sure to be heated. The night kicked off with Craig Stidham stopping the clocks with an 11.941 lap that was strong enough to ensure the Speed T's entry quick time for the night.
The first heat race finished with local favorite Evan Suggs taking the checkers in front of Stephen Allard, who was once again wheeling the David Key trucking entry. Stephen was followed to the line by Craig Stidham, Brent Kaeding and Craig Smith.
Heat race number two saw current point leader Bud Kaeding in the Werbach Motorsports #20 outrun "the big guy" Jason Statler to the finish. Behind Statler the battle for third was won by veteran racer Anthony Simone. Simone was chased to the line by second year driver Ricky Wright Jr., and rookie Justin Sanders.
Heat race number three was dominated by the Tarlton & Sons #21, Tommy Tarlton. The Tachi Palace Maxim seemed to be on a rail as Tommy crossed the checkers almost a full straightaway over veteran, and former World of Outlaw regular Brad Furr. Following Furr to the line was Jerry Bonnema, Myles Bishop and rookie contender Matt Sargent.
The main event was nothing short of exciting as the 30 lap feature may have been the best since the Wright One 360 series conception. Craig Smith jumped out to an early lead from his front row starting spot while outside front row starter Brad Furr went to work to chase him down .It was lap nine when Furr maneuvered his Big O Tires entry into the lead, and was now being chased by Smith and point leader Bud Kaeding. As the battle between Furr and Kaeding heated up there were some hard chargers looking to get in on the action. Tommy Tarlton and Jason Statler were mounting their charge to the front. On lap 19 Tommy Tarlton slid the family owned entry into the lead until a late race spin on the slick track took him out of contention. Brad Furr was now in position to pick off his first feature win in the Wright One 360 Series, until a slip up in turn three on lap 24 allowed Bud Kaeding to put his Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company entry into the lead. This was all Bud Kaeding needed to secure his second series win of the year, and stronghold on his point lead. Behind bud was Furr, Jason Statler from his 10th starting spot, Ronnie Day in the Keith Day entry, and rounding out the top five was "Hall of Famer" Brent Kaeding. Completing the top ten were Evan Suggs, Tommy Tarlton, Craig Stidham, Craig Smith, and Jerry Bonnema. The top three finishers have now secured themselves a starting spot in the prestigious Johnny Key Classic to be held at Ocean Speedway August 29, 2008. Round six of the Wright One 360 series resumes Friday night June 27, 2008, which also returns the second round of qualifying for the Johnny Key memorial race. Ocean Speedway would like to congratulate the Kaeding family for a few major accomplishments this past week. Brent Kaeding, our inaugural Wright One Series Champion, was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. Awesome job BK! Our current point leader and (3) time series feature winner Bud Kaeding and wife Jennifer welcomed the birth of their new baby girl, Mackenzie.
