According to today's ASCS Canyon Sprints Press Release:

ASCS Canyon Region Adds Additional Manzanita Half-Mile Event

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 29, 2008) – With the opening one-third of the season nearly in the books for the Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region, the series has added an additional Manzanita Speedway event to its September slate.

The series is now set to take to the famed Phoenix, AZ, ½-mile clay oval on Saturday night, September 20. The ASCS Canyon Region event replaces the originally scheduled USAC/CRA card set for that night.

The September 20 ASCS Canyon Region outing will mark the fifth of six scheduled events for the series on the half-mile. The series first card on the half-mile took place on March 29, with current point leader Jeremy Sherman beating Charles Davis, Jr., and Josh Pelkey to the line.

With the added event, the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region is now set for an even 30 nights of racing in 2008. In addition to 19 events on Manzanita's 1/3-mile oval and a half dozen on the half-mile, the series also includes three events at Tucson's USA Race Park and two cards at Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway.

Through the series opening nine events of the season, four different drivers have reached victory lane. Sherman and Charles Davis, Jr., have each posted three wins, Casey Shuman has recorded a pair of triumphs and R.J. Johnson has reached victory lane once.

Sherman holds the series point lead with a 28-point advantage over Davis, with Johnson, Nathan High and Mike Martin rounding out the early top five.

A dozen different drivers have competed in all nine ASCS Canyon Region events thus far in 2008 (Sherman, Davis, Johnson, High, Martin, Josh Pelkey, Jeremy Reagles, Mike Leslie, Andrew Reinbold, Thomas Ogle, Justin Fisher and Bobby Taylor), with an average car count of 26.1 cars per event.
