Unofficial.

2008 Wilmot Speedway
Saturday, May 24th

First Heat Race (8 Laps)
1. Tommy Sexton [1]; 2. Todd Daun [5]; 3. Scott Grissom [2]; 4. Mike Dubs [6]; 5. Adam Schroeder [3]; 6. Larry VanDerVere [4]; 7. Jason Cox [7]; 8. Dan Shepherd [8]; 9. Phillip Mock [9].

Mock, the 16 year-old son of Kim makes his 410 cu. in. competition debut. Ragged initial start is waved off saves VanDerVere his starting spot after he spins through turns 1-2. Shepherd spun as well. Sexton easily takes the lead over Grissom into turn 1 at the go and the distance. Cox busts a 360 spin through turns 1-2 around the third lap while Daun takes the 2nd spot. Shepherd and Mock would become lapped fodder before the checkers.

Second Heat Race
1. Rick Kelsey [3]; 2. Tim VanDerVere [8]; 3. Kris Spitz [7]; 4. Scott Semmelman [5]; 5. Darrell Dodd [4]; 6. Jeremy Schroeder [9]; 7. Scott Lenz [6]; 8. Kirk Fehrman [2]; 9. Johnny Fahl [10]; DNF-Dave Maynard [1].

Another ragged start leaves Kelsey in the Donald Dodd No. 01 this weekend getting reared by Lenz who will have a nose wing laying on the hood for this event. Dodd takes the lead over Fehrman and Semmelman in the opening half until Kelsey uses the low lines to make his presence known to the Top-3 until the lead is his for good around Lap-5. Next time around, Maynard spins to a stall above the banking turn 2. Kelsey takes the easy win while the battles for 2nd, 3rd and 4th were pretty good as VanDerVere moved-in and around Spitz and Semmelman. Maynard ducks pit side as the white is wielded to the field.

Feature (25 Laps)
1. Tommy Sexton [7]; 2. Todd Daun [8]; 3. Kris Spitz [6]; 4. Rick Kelsey [9]; 5. Scott Semmelman [4]; 6. Tim VanDerVere [10]; 7. Mike Dubs [3]; 8. Adam Schroeder [1]; 9. Jeremy Schroeder [10]; 10. Darrell Dodd [2]; 1
1. Johnny Fahl [16]; 12. Jason Cox [11]; 13. Phillip Mock [15]; DNF-14. Kirk Fehrman [14]; DNF-15. Dave Maynard [17]; DNF-16. Scott Grissom [5]; DNF-17. Dan Shepherd [13]; DNF-18. Scott Lenz [12]; DNF-19. Larry VanDerVere [9].
Lap leaders: Darrell Dodd 1-8, Scott Semmelman 9-13, Tommy Sexton 14-25.

Unusual exchange of a difference of opinion shortly after push-off between T. VanDerVere stopping his car on the raceway, jumping out of safety gear discussing with track officials on the frontstretch leads to a lengthy delay during line-up. Cooler heads prevail when Larry, (Tim’s dad) also stops joining the situation and perhaps quickly end the shenanigans. When all is said and done, T. VanDerVere is moved to the tail for being late to staging. Dodd takes the lead over A. Schroeder, Dubs and Semmelman at the drop of the green. Lap-3: Yellow is out after Grissom initially spins to a stall through turns 1-2 and gets clipped by Lenz. Shepherd spins above turns 1-2 and he gets clipped by L. VanDerVere. Lenz is done with at least a flat right rear, while the elder Vandy is done from front end damage. T. VanDerVere ducks off the track under caution. Dodd with his top wing wicker bill hanging on by only a rivet or two leads A. Schroeder, Dubs, Semmelman, Spitz, Sexton on the restart with was yellowed after Shepherd spins again in turn 2 and under track rules is sent to the hauler. T. VanDerVere benefits with the added caution and rejoins the field. Dodd finally pulls on the field from a few laps after the restart as Dubs asserts himself for the 2nd spot using the low line which bites him on Lap-8 and he spins in turns 1-2. Lap-9: Semmelman charges into the lead moments before Dodd loses the wicker bill and a yellow for that debris in turns 1-2 lands him at the tail end of the field. Running order: Semmelman, Sexton, Spitz, Daun, A. Schroeder, Kelsey, Fehrman, J. Schroeder, T. VanDerVere in the Top-10. Daun makes the most of the restart and races into the 3rd spot using the low line through turns 1-2 with Spitz not giving the position so easy and the two would race wheel-to-wheel for a lap. Lap-13: Yellow is out after Grissom spins to a stall with an announced throttle issue. T. VanDerVere has made short work and he restarts 7th. Sexton takes the lead out of turn 2 after Semmelman washed above the turn 2 cushion slightly as Daun takes the 2nd spot next time around. Lap-15: Maynard ducks into the infield ending his night. Sexton is running well and only traffic around Lap-20 allows Daun to close-in for a brief challenge for the lead. Fehrman slows into the infield with a couple of laps remaining as the former track champion-Sexton takes the win and thanks his car owners and his crew for the sage advice setting up the 83D to perform better in the later stages of this deal.

Mini Sprints put on a good show for sure. What they need to do is get rid of the imca junk and have a sprint, mini sprint, and hobby stock program. You need the hobby stocks for a filler program. And thet bring in money to the pits. Wilmot screwed up when they got rid of the MRA modifieds. When they brought in the IMCA they did not even give the MRA a chance to have a lower purse or anything. Wilmot just said the MRA was gone and in with the imca. Because a few of the clowns that ran the beater class before wanted them. Some of them still race them. Those things cost as much as a sprint car minus the motor and wheels. And the imca for sure DOES NOT put on a good program at Wilmot. I have seen a good imca program at Charter where they race for more then 2 laps without a yellow flag. Hopefully these clown promotors at wilmot will be gone next year and the new people will make it better.

Preach it brother.......... I could'nt agree more. I have'nt been to Wilmot except for IRA shows in 3 years, for the 2 reasons you mentioned, the IMCA type mods, and the promotors. Go any track in Wi. and see the way they race the mods. No screwing around, professional program, and no need to line them up for 10 minutes, get it right or get off the track, pretty simple really. Last nite my wife worked, would have loved to do the 15 minute ride to Wilmot, but just could'nt bear what I knew already would happen, so I watched NASCAR, now thats a sad statement, stay home and not drive 15 minutes to see real racing. Whats even worse is, I been going to Wilmot since it was the old 1/4 mile behind the school, I think I was 10 my first time there, I am 54 now so I been around awhile. I hate not to support the track because we all know, when it's gone, it's never coming back, but even a old, dyed in the wool fan can only take so much.

Attending that Wilmot weekly stuff is an unfortunate resolve of $4/Gallon gas.

In the past, when IRA was off or way up north like Superior, one could simply cruise to Knoxville or Kokomo for a show or something and not think anything of it. Now, in gas alone $100 to get there-and-back forces staying at home for the local stuff, but the pain from the headaches with the tomfoolery at Wilmot is well out-of-hand for the short time I have lived in this

Thinks the flagman was out of the stand and on the track more than he was perched that night. How hard would it be to have a "Competition Director" or "Race Control" to organize and make the calls trackside. The flagman should never leave the perch, especially with headphones on. Hit the button, say what you gotta say and have the trackside guy address the issue. Think I was able to get a few good naps in during that race as the yellow was out more times than green as well. Totally unacceptable behavior on both sides of the track that night.

The PA announcer getting verbal with boisterous fans is unacceptable as well. There is always going to be an amount of "Boo-ing" but is the announcer not supposed to be somewhat neutral in regards to racing decisions and fan reaction? Just cause one has the mic, does not mean an attitude towards some hecklers is necessary.

I have not attended that many Wilmot events, sans the IRA and WoO, but this weekly stuff is ridiculous for the few times I have been to and certainly gotta find another venue for "off-weekends". 360s at Plymouth is two hours away, so what do they run for support divisions?

This weekend looks promising as Badger / USAC Midgey's are at Dodge Friday, IRA / Badger at Charter Saturday and Badger closes the weekend at Angell.

You da man A.J's Pappy. I unfortunately paid the $30 to get into the pits after the heat races were over. Yes I know I'm an idiot. Does anybody know when the lease is up for slow motion entertainment? Another thing that would help this place dramatically would be some damn transponders. Or a video camera and a tripod might work. At least for the sprints and the imca's. I mean damn there were drivers jumping out of their rides at the single wide trailer arguing their case. There was a decent crowd on hand but not for long. I just hope when this place is available again a group people with a real racing background can save it. A.J. were gonna have to get together one of these weekends and maybe hit Knoxville for some real racing.

I am sure that we do not need to lose another local track. Wisconsin has lost Hales and Lake Geneva. Maybe more just cannot remember now. Illinois lost Sante Fe years ago. I am a dirt guy and love to see good racing. Hit all the local IRA stuff. Go to Knoxville Nationals, Chili Bowl, Outlaw World Finals at Charlotte, so we go to alot of races. I wanted to go to Wilmot with it being a nice night. Just could not go with these promoters there. These guys ran the last good group of 410 sprints out of there also. They do have a decent group there now. These are all guys that do not want to travel. Different reasons for all. We will be at Charter Saturday watching a good race with the IRA and Midgets. Hopefully some USAC guys will be there. Expect a excellent show just like a few weeks ago. Mooner if you need a ride up there give me a call. Reporacer my dream racing program would be 410 sprints IRA or good quality program, MRA modifieds, Minisprints, and Badger midgets. Any combination. I guess I gotta go buy some lottery tickets.

Thats nice to hear people like to see the mini sprints...We been slowly building the class... This year we have got alot of new cars and a few past drivers return...With a high car count of 17 last week was nice to see for once...Still have about 10 cars in the area either not ready still do to cash, fuel prices,or running another class on the same night else where...

These little cars are the best bang for your buck... Unlike the past with over priced/built motors... These newer gsxr,r1,zx10 motors all stock 1000 motors are more powerful than ever before untouched... To add very reliable and plentiful to find from 1000.00 to 3000.00 for a brand new one...And last you 2 years...

Your group has been doing a great job Nick- it is nice to see some growth to the Mini Sprints. I hope to catch some of your races this year. Any other tracks your venturing to this season?

Michael,

Dont forget the MSA is running non-wing at the Prairie on Sunday night as well. Never saw the first show but heard it was good.

By the way, Plymouth also runs late models, grand nationals, and some 4 cylinder class. Alot of cars on Saturday nights.
