by Lee Elder

VENTURA, Calif. (May 14, 2008) – The United States Auto Club’s Western Midgets highlight the May 17 racing card at Ventura Raceway, one of five racing classes competing at the Seaside Park facility.

The midgets have been popular guests at Ventura. Saturday’s race will mark the 117th time the open-wheel racers have taken to the ..20-mile clay oval.

The other classes scheduled to compete Saturday include the Ventura Racing Association Senior Sprints and Sport Compacts and USAC’s Ford Focus Midgets and Junior Ford Focus Midgets.

Scott Pierovich (of Alamo, Calif.) leads the Western Midget points with 208. Nic Faas (Huntington Beach) is second with 203. Faas finished second to Josh Ford when the Western Midgets raced at Ventura in April.

There have been six winners in the first 10 races of the Western Midgets season.

Racing starts at 5:30 p.m. and the spectator gates open at 3:30.

Raceway notes: Sleepy Tripp is the winningest midget racer at Ventura. Tripp has 18 wins at the track…Robby Flock, who is expected to compete at Ventura this week, has 53 career midget wins…Ventura’s pits were crowded with 121 cars on May 10, making three straight weeks the track has hosted 100 or more racecars…VRA Dwarf Car point leaders had a rough night on May 10. Senior leader Jim Scribellito and Pro leader Brian Saxton both went out early due to racing incidents.
