Ok I am staying out of this b/c I have had plenty of arguments with these people to where my head is sore. Disclaimer-it is an OSU board and in this matter I am not an OSU fan but a racing fan. Also, I know NASCAR is somtimes boring and all but saying race drivers are not athletes.

osu peoples are borderline dorks anyway. Many of them still think that movie Deliverance is another osu love story.Jim Trabor on the sports animal is one that will argue with anyone that racers are not atheletes. He thinks the WWE is for real.

I think all those local guys on the Sports Animal is intelligent - and I enjoy listening to em - but their lack of coverage of racing - ESPECIALLY LOCAL RACING - is freakin pathetic. they'll sit there and talk about college golf or track and field - but never talk about the largest and most populous friday night sports venue in the state. I understand when high school football is in season. but for such cool and intelligent dudes - its bullshit they don't even recognize it. but in truth those guys are told what to talk about and what not to.

There are 2 kinds of people who say drivers are not athletic. Those who drive and wish not to heap praise upon themselves///////// and those who don't drive and wish to heap praise upon themselves or their

stick and ball heroes.

What it boils down to is this, they want the attention NASCAR and every other racing genre is taking from the their programs of choice. Just like a TV preacher goes after the audience of a fallen colleague.

just read the article - and man this could be argued in a million different ways in a million different places. As for a generalization - I'd be willing to bet 100% of people who refuse to recognize racing as a sport do not like racing.

when you think of stick and ball sports and all the hard work, practicing, and natural talent involved. you can indeed flip that over to racing ------ many racers are born with the sharp reflexes and lightning quick decision making - and all continue to work hard on that. instead of running suicides or whatever - most drivers (especially local guys) - hold down FULL TIME JOBS - and then have to juggle gettin that car ready with the time needed for other things - (ie family). a racers sacrifice is just as great and in some ways greater than that of a football, b-ball, or baseball player. 99% of the cars we see at the track took GREAT SACRIFICE to get out there. time, effort, and money. I bet racers that hold down full time jobs put just as much if not more effort into their sport than most "pro's" do to theirs.

But that is where the problem lies with out sport. the money. anyone can go on a field and play baseball, basketball, soccer, football...............but not just anyone can go racing. sure you can race your bikes as a kid - that should count some. but the racing in which we have featured into our minds - circle dirt tracks...................you have to have a bunch of money for. not just anyone can go and play/do it like they can with the stick and ball sports. I think that fundementally sets featured racing apart from the other sports. and it makes into a sport that is almost - elitist. please don't get me wrong - no one is really intending it to be that way. but the money involved keeps it from ever being ANYTHING like the stick and ball sports. sure on a pro level its $$$ - but you can play those sports on playgrounds as kid - the only racing kids can do is running or on bike's. not all families can afford motorbikes, 4 wheelers, or racecars. especially inner city - which is ironically where you see so many great stick and ball athletes come from. but sorry I'm getting into the social nature of it and demographics and other things that don't matter to what this thread is about.

Yes - racing is a sport. for most it takes just as much hard work and effort to succeed as do other sports of more recognition. but for the reasons in the paragraph above - it can never reach the # of people the other sports can. but that certainly doesn't make it any less a sport now does it? people need to discern the difference...................just b/c they have no opportunity to get out on a dirt track themselves - either for lack of interest, balls, or money ------ doesn't make racing any less a sport than others. It's an easy argument to win for a race fan if they state things reasonably. baseball, football, basketball, tennis, hockey, RACING, la crosse, volleyball, soccer, etc. are ALL SPORTS. Dominoes, spelling bee's, beauty pageants, jeapordy, wheel of fortune, card games, etc. ---- ARE GAMES. and yeah even some of those can be fun to view or watch - poker is ok - but not for long periods of time. but I don't intend to demean those things - man if someone is like REALLY into dominoes, or card games - even bingo. hey rock on man! thats your thing and I ain't no one to criticize - so it pisses me off when others try to demean racing b/c they think it builds other sports up. I mean c'mon! does a football fan need to discredit racing to make football more of a sport?!?!? hell no. football is great sport in its own right - just as others are too. people need to just quit f-n trying to press their beliefs on everyone else so hard. it's cool to passionately defend one's opinion -- but like everything else in life -- people act like if you don't agree with them the sky is falling and you're screwed. screw it - I don't want to sit next to those people at the racetrack anyways.

And I don't think people should be lookin at nascrap to gauge whether racing is a sport or not. I say look at drivers at places like SFS, BMS, and hundreds of other dirt tracks across the nation - and then gauge it. Look at the fellas that work from 6am - to- 6pm. and then sacrifice the money they make into a race car. the race car they then work on from 6pm to midnight - and many have families they may be raising - or houses and properties to take care of. so they have much more to do than just the racecar from 6pm to midnite. just from an outside perspective (fan) - I think it's MAJOR sacrifices and effort to get the car out on the racetrack. and just as in many other stick and ball sports - it can bring people together too - families, old friends, new friends - people of all different backgrounds, locations, and pasts, under one common thing - racing.

hey there's a non-political rant! lol.

Well they did'nt say anything about Hemmingway's Quote but they asked a question about Earnhardt's. They asked if Earnhardt had ever heard of a marathon.

Ask them how many of their so called Athletes could withstand a 500 mile race, about 3 hours of non stop movement and thinking in a three layer quilted driving suit, helmet, and gloves on a hot and humid day with cockpit temperatures reaching nearly 200 degrees and G-forces that equal a Fighter Jet Pilot at each and every turn.

Yes, race car drivers are defiantly Athletes.

Hell most of those overpriced, over paid Jackasses can't even drive their Hummers to the Grocery Store at 45mph without incident. Must have something to do with all the Armour-All and Jerry Curl that makes the steering wheel so elusive.
