SATURDAY’S “GERHARDT CLASSIC” FEATURES 3-ABREAST START; ZIMMERLY SCORES UPSET IN “PACIFIC COAST SPRING NATIONALS”

APRIL 22, 2008 --- The spectacular three-abreast start will kick off Saturday night’s 100-lap “Gerhardt Classic” for the USAC Western Midgets at Madera (Calif.) Speedway.

Nic Faas of Yorba Linda, Calif. is only seven points ahead of Scott Pierovich of Alamo, Calif. in the latest USAC Western Midget standings going into Saturday night’s race on the 1/3-mile paved oval.

Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif., who is expected to pilot the Bob Rosen Midget Saturday, will try to become the winningest USAC driver in Madera Speedway history. He’s currently tied with Davey Hamilton at nine career USAC wins. Saturday’s race will be the 104th for USAC at the storied track where Sleepy Tripp won the first USAC race in 1976. A total of 54 different drivers have tasted victory in USAC races at Madera.

Paul Zimmerly of Ridgefield, Wash. ended up winning last Saturday’s “Pacific Coast Spring Nationals” USAC Western Midget race at Altamont Motorsports Park after the race was halted after 23 laps due to a tangle between Faas and Garrett Hansen. Zimmerly had taken the lead in his K & N Filters/Toyota TRD Spike/Toyota on lap 16 from Evan Margeson, who led the first 15 laps.

Michael Faccinto ended up second ahead of Daniel Bedford, Levi Roberts and Shane Mathews.

Pierovich was the first driver to exit Saturday’s race, while Faas ended up 11th.

Saturday’s Madera race honors the famed Gerhardt racing family of Fresno, including the late Fred Gerhardt who passed away in 2001 and was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame this January.
